SHARJAH// A Sharjah family have been reunited with their newborn daughter after she was accidentally stolen by car thieves.
Baby Lailas was in the back of the white Toyota Prado when it was stolen from Sanaiya 6 area on Saturday night after the parents left it with the engine running.
"At 10pm [Saturday] night, we received the call, we then sent out patrols to search the area," said Maj Mohamed Al Shihi, head of the public relations section at Sharjah police.
The police put out an alert on Twitter, which was quickly retweeted by hundreds of Sharjah residents.
Within hours Ahmed Ibrahim Al Shamsi, an Emirati from Sharjah, contacted police on Twitter to say he had spotted the car.
And at 5am, just after dawn, the car was found with Lailas safe inside in Muwailah, a few kilometers from where it was stolen.
"The baby was then taken immediately to Al Qassimi hospital were she was found to be in good health," Maj Al Shihi said. The family were reunited in time for before Eid prayers.
"We would really like to thank all those who responded to us through Twitter and Ahmed Ibrahim Al Shamsi for helping us."
Maj Al Shihi blamed the father who left Lailas inside. "There was negligence from his side," he said. "He should have taken more care and not left the baby alone in the car."
