UAE family reunited by Twitter after car thieves steal baby by mistake

SHARJAH// A Sharjah family have been reunited with their newborn daughter after she was accidentally stolen by car thieves.

Baby Lailas was in the back of the white Toyota Prado when it was stolen from Sanaiya 6 area on Saturday night after the parents left it with the engine running.

"At 10pm [Saturday] night, we received the call, we then sent out patrols to search the area," said Maj Mohamed Al Shihi, head of the public relations section at Sharjah police.

The police put out an alert on Twitter, which was quickly retweeted by hundreds of Sharjah residents.

Within hours Ahmed Ibrahim Al Shamsi, an Emirati from Sharjah, contacted police on Twitter to say he had spotted the car.

And at 5am, just after dawn, the car was found with Lailas safe inside in Muwailah, a few kilometers from where it was stolen.

"The baby was then taken immediately to Al Qassimi hospital were she was found to be in good health," Maj Al Shihi said. The family were reunited in time for before Eid prayers.

"We would really like to thank all those who responded to us through Twitter and Ahmed Ibrahim Al Shamsi for helping us."

Maj Al Shihi blamed the father who left Lailas inside. "There was negligence from his side," he said. "He should have taken more care and not left the baby alone in the car."

Karzai, Panetta concerned over 'insider attacks'

Pentagon chief Leon Panetta urged Afghan President Hamid Karzai on Saturday to crack down on a rise in attacks by Afghan security personnel on their Western colleagues, officials said.

US concern is mounting over the unprecedented number of such "green-on-blue" attacks, which have now killed 39 international troops in 29 such incidents so far this year, according to NATO figures.

During a telephone call, Panetta and Karzai "expressed shared concern" over the challenge of insider attacks against coalition and Afghan forces, Pentagon spokesman George Little said in a statement.

The pair "agreed that American and Afghan officials should work even more closely together to minimize the potential for insider attacks in the future," he added.

Panetta also encouraged Karzai to work closely with General John Allen, who heads the international coalition force ISAF in Afghanistan.

Karzai's collaboration was needed to "further strengthen ISAF-Afghan cooperation to counter the insider attack threat, including augmented counterintelligence measures, even more rigorous vetting of Afghan recruits, and stepped up engagement with village elders, who often play a key role by vouching for Afghan security personnel," the statement said.

Concern over insider attacks mounted Friday, when two Afghan security personnel opened fire on Western colleagues, killing two US soldiers and causing a number of other casualties in two separate attacks.

The attacks further eroded trust between foreign troops and the Afghans they work with, a week after six American troops were killed in a single day by their local colleagues.

The two Americans were killed in western Farah province, NATO's US-led International Security Assistance Force said. ISAF also confirmed that an unspecified number of foreign and Afghan soldiers were shot and wounded by an Afghan soldier in the southern province of Kandahar.

Panetta said he was "very concerned" about the insider attacks and the impact they are having on cooperation with Afghan allies.

The attacks will likely add to pressure in NATO nations for an exit as soon as possible from the increasingly unpopular war now nearly 11 years old.

'NE Indians getting adequate protection in S India'

CHENNAI: The Centre today said adequate protection is being given by state governments in the South to people of the North East fleeing on rumours of attacks and termed as "false" and "fabricated" reports that they are not being provided enough security.

"Protection is being given by state governments. Some miscreants, undesirable elements and anti-social elements are spreading rumours that there is no protection to people of the North East in South India. It is unwarranted. It is totally false and fabricated to create panic among people", Minister of State in the PMO V Narayanasamy told reporters here.

Noting that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde had told the North Easterners they have "as much right" as anybody else to study and work in any part of the country, he said, "They will be given protection by the (respective) State governments".

According to Railways, upto 30,000 people have fled Bangalore to various North East states as rumours spread like wildfire of impending attacks on people from the North East in the wake of the Assam violence. A similiar pattern is being seen in Tamil Nadu, but in far lesser numbers.

Both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments have taken steps to reach out to the North Eastern people, telling them that they are safe in their states and they would do everything possible to protect them.

I have family in the southern California area, and I love spending time with them. But I also love spending time in Disneyland too. It's always something of a tough situation, trying to decide how much time to spend with them and how much to spend in the parks. The last couple trips I've actually resorted to something kinda extreme - I lie to family (OH, THE SHAME!). For instance, I might travel from Texas to Anaheim on a Thursday, but I tell them I'm coming in to town on Friday. And I do the same thing at the other end as well. I don't feel really good about this, but at least it's a way for me to spend some quality time in a place that I love, and then spend quality time with the fam.

Now, I don't have to worry about this on my WDW trips, as the only people I know down there actually work in the World!

Foreign Office: Assange decision 'changes nothing'

Britain and Ecuador were embroiled in a diplomatic face-off Thursday after the Foreign Office said Quito's decision to grant asylum to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, holed up in its embassy in London, "changes nothing".

Ecuador decided Thursday to grant political asylum to Assange, who sought refuge in the country's embassy in Britain to avert extradition to Sweden

Commenting on the "disappointing" decision, a spokeswoman said: "Under our law, with Mr Assange having exhausted all options of appeal, the British authorities are under a binding obligation to extradite him to Sweden. We shall carry out that obligation."

Earlier Thursday, official notes emerged which showed that Britain told Quito it would refuse Assange safe passage out of the country were his asylum bid granted. The note read: "We must be absolutely clear this means that should we receive a request for safe passage for Mr Assange, after granting asylum, this would be refused."

Sweden also issued a statement rejecting the asylum decision. "Our firm legal and constitutional system guarantees the rights of each and everyone. We firmly reject any accusations to the contrary," Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said on his Twitter account.

"The Ecuador government, loyal to its tradition to protect those who seek refuge with us at our diplomatic missions, has decided to grant diplomatic asylum to Mr Assange," Ecuadoran Foreign Minister Ricardo Patino said at a news conference.

Patino said his government reached its decision after Britain, Sweden and the United States refused to provide guarantees that Assange would not be extradited to the United States where he fears trial for the release of a trove of classified US documents.

"If he were extradited to the United States, Mr Assange would not receive a fair trial (and) could be judged by special tribunals or military courts," he said.

"It is not implausible that he would be subjected to cruel and degrading treatment and be condemned to life in prison or capital punishment."

Britain ordered Assange extradited to Sweden, where he was wanted for questioning about allegations of rape and sexual assault, after he had exhausted all legal appeals.

He then turned up at the Ecuadoran embassy in London on June 19, and requested political asylum.

Patino said Assange's imprisonment in Sweden "would open up a chain of events that would impede his avoiding extradition to a third country."

"As a result, Ecuador feels his arguments mean his fears are genuine, that he could be the victim of political persecution because of his decisive defense of the freedom of expression and the freedom of the press," he said.

Protesters cheered outside Ecuador's embassy in London as the decision was read on live television.

Around a dozen policemen, some wearing stab vests, were positioned outside the embassy in the exclusive Knightsbridge district of London near the Harrods department store. Three protesters have been arrested.

Earlier, Ecuador hit out at Britain for threatening to breach its embassy's diplomatic immunity and enter the building to arrest the 41-year-old Australian, while WikiLeaks said such action would be "a hostile and extreme act".

Patino said it would be "unacceptable" for British police to enter the embassy.

Patino said Wednesday that Ecuador had received "an express threat in writing" from Britain "that they could storm our embassy if Ecuador does not hand over Julian Assange."

"Ecuador rejects in the strongest terms the explicit threat made in Britain's official communication," Patino told reporters.

"The position taken by the government of Great Britain is unacceptable, both from the political and the legal point of view," he said, warning that entering the embassy without authorization "would be a flagrant violation of the Vienna Convention" on diplomatic relations.

The Foreign Office has threatened to invoke the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act of 1987, which it says allows it to revoke the diplomatic immunity of an embassy on British soil.

The US has mulled action against Assange after WikiLeaks published hundreds of thousands of confidential US files on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as a vast cache of embarrassing US diplomatic cables.

Assange's supporters say he could even face the death penalty in the US, pointing to authorities' harsh treatment of US army private Bradley Manning, who is on trial for allegedly leaking secret military documents to WikiLeaks.

Children's physical activity levels are not enough to counteract sedentary lifestyles

Children's physical activity levels are not enough to counteract sedentary lifestyles

    Wednesday, August 15, 2012

Children who spend more than three-quarters of their time engaging in sedentary behaviour, such as watching TV and sitting at computers, have up to nine times poorer motor coordination than their more active peers, reveals a study published in the American Journal of Human Biology.

The study, involving Portuguese children, found that physical activity alone was not enough to overcome the negative effect of sedentary behaviour on basic motor coordination skills such as walking, throwing or catching, which are considered the building blocks of more complex movements.

"Childhood is a critical time for the development of motor coordination skills which are essential for health and well-being," said lead author Dr Luis Lopes, from the University of Minho. "We know that sedentary lifestyles have a negative effect on these skills and are associated with decreased fitness, lower self-esteem, decreased academic achievement and increased obesity."

Dr Lopes' team studied 110 girls and 103 boys aged nine to ten from 13 urban elementary schools. The children's sedentary behaviour and physical activity were objectively measured with accelerometers (a small device that children attach to their waist that quantifies movement counts and intensities) over five consecutive days. Motor coordination was evaluated with the KTK test (K?rperkoordination Test f?r Kinder), which includes balance, jumping laterally, hopping on one leg over an obstacle and shifting platforms.

The tests were supplemented with a questionnaire for parents to assess health variables, before the authors compiled the results into three models to calculate odd ratios for predicting motor coordination. These were adjusted for physical activity and accelerometer wear time, waist to height ratio and home variables.

On average the children spent 75.6% of their time being sedentary, but the impact on motor coordination was found to be greater on boys than girls.

Girls who spent 77.3% or more of their time being sedentary were 4 to 5 times less likely to have normal motor coordination than more active girls. However, boys who were sedentary for more than 76% of their time were between 5 to 9 times less likely to have good or normal motor coordination than their active peers.

"It is very clear from our study that a high level of sedentary behaviour is an independent predictor of low motor coordination, regardless of physical activity levels and other key factors" said Lopes. "High sedentary behaviour had a significant impact on the children's motor coordination, with boys being more adversely affected than girls."

Until now there has been little research into the links between sedentary behaviour and motor coordination, but these findings reveal that physical activity did not counteract the negative effects that high levels of sedentary behaviour had on motor coordination.

"The results demonstrate the importance of setting a maximum time for sedentary behaviour, while encouraging children to increase their amount of physical activity," concluded Lopes. "We hope that our findings will make a valuable contribution to the debate on child health and encourage future investigations on this subject."

Better ways for developing, testing cancer therapies

ScienceDaily (Aug. 15, 2012) ? A group of Kansas State University researchers has made valuable findings in the search for cancer's cure.

While researching ways to improve animal health, the scientists -- Raymond "Bob" Rowland, a virologist and professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology, and Deryl Troyer, professor of anatomy and physiology -- have made two important discoveries that can also improve human health. Not only have they found pigs with severe combined immunodeficiency, or SCID, but they are also the first to discover the connection with human cancer, particularly melanomas and pancreatic cancers.

The researchers call it a scientific achievement with huge potential to improve surgeries and drug development involved with cancer.

"This could be a game-changer," Troyer said.

It began with Rowland's research with controlling and eliminating porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, or PRRS. The work led to a fortuitous discovery: a naturally occurring line of immunodeficient pigs.

"Pigs are closely related to humans anatomically and physiologically," Rowland said. "This can have huge potential for human cancer research."

After the discovery of SCID pigs, Rowland turned to Troyer, who performs cancer research. Their collaborative work not only enables researchers to better study SCID pigs, but they can also apply their research to the study of human cancer and anti-cancer drugs.

"This is a great example of collaborative and interdisciplinary research," Troyer said. "With two perspectives, there is often a synergy that evolves because of different ways of thinking."

The researchers have already studied human melanomas and human pancreatic cancers, which are devastating types of cancer and a big target in cancer research, Troyer said. They want to apply the same methods to other types of solid cancers and blood neoplasms like leukemia.

While similar research has been performed with SCID mice, it has not adapted well to human cancer research. Rowland said there is about a 90 percent failure rate in translation of results from mice to humans. Research involving SCID pigs may be more beneficial to human cancer research because pigs are closer anatomically to humans.

The research opens a variety of doors for both animal and human health research. It may now be easier for scientists to improve strategies for bone marrow transplants. They also have a better way to detect cancer drug side effects and test surgical interventions, Troyer said.

"The potential is a little daunting because it is as if there is no horizon limiting possible ways to utilize this model, " Troyer said. "It is an opportunity for Kansas State University to be a leader in the field and to become a center for large animal biomedical research."

For Rowland, the discovery also opens new doors for infectious disease research.

"There are a lot of pig diseases for which we still don't know how they function and how they cause disease," Rowland said. "Now we are able to ask the question, 'What role does the immune system play in clearing the virus or in causing disease?'"

The research also improves the study of zoonotic diseases, which are diseases -- like swine influenza -- that can be transmitted between animals and humans. By developing vaccines for diseases in SCID pigs, scientists can gain insight into human vaccine development. The university's Biosecurity Research Institute provides the ideal location for developing these vaccines, Rowland said.

The scientists have performed research on a small scale and now want to build it up to a larger scale. They see possibilities for new research with the Kansas State University Johnson Cancer Research Center as well as cancer research partnerships and collaborations with the University of Kansas Cancer Center, especially with its recent National Cancer Institute designation.

"Agriculture benefits the people of the state in so many ways," Rowland said. "While it includes jobs and exports, there is a human element that we sometimes forget. This is a good example of how we can take animal health research and all of a sudden it has the potential to help cure human cancer."

The research recently appeared in the journal BioResearch Open Access. Rowland and Troyer have another upcoming publication in the Journal of Veterinary Pathology.

Fab Sues Flash Sales Site TouchOfModern For Alleged Trademark Infringement

copycatWhen you're a company that's grown as quickly as Fab.com, the design-oriented flash sales site which is on track to make more than $100 million in revenue this year and recently closed on $105 million in funding at a rumored $600 million valuation, it's pretty much a given that some people might look to emulate your path to success. But according to Fab, one startup is taking the imitation a bit too far. On August 9th, Fab filed a lawsuit against a San Francisco company called Whitehawk Ventures, which does business as TouchofModern.com, a design-oriented flash sales site that debuted earlier this year (click here to read TechCrunch's coverage of that launch.)

    The Queue: Pet battles

Welcome back to The Queue, the daily Q&A column in which the WoW Insider team answers your questions about the World of Warcraft. Alex Ziebart will be your host today.

Today's edition of The Queue is all about pet battles and the upcoming patch 5.0.4.

    NunoMarce asked:

Regarding Companion Pets, I'm still in dark about what Pets I can and cannot put in a cage and sell. Suppose I've been stacking Mr.Grubbs from the Eastern Plaguelands, can I sell them once the xpack hits? What about Rep based pets, like the Tiny Sporeling? I was under the impression the only pets you couldn't sell were CE ones, but this has changed recently?

Wild pets, the ones you catch via battling, cannot be caged at all. If you want the best quality wild pets, you need to go out and catch them yourself, not just dump gold on them. Many of the pets you've learned via items over the years can be traded. Pets such as the Ammen Vale Lashling from the Argent Tournament can be caged and sold at your leisure. I don't have a complete list of those that cannot be caged/sold, but it's generally the ones with some supreme exclusivity such as collector's edition pets or other pets you simply cannot acquire multiple times. Of the pets in the game right now, well over 100 of them can be caged, sold, or traded.

As a few quick examples, I was just able to cage my Sinister Squashling, since it is an event item you can acquire repeatedly, but I was unable to cage Pebble because he is an achievement reward. Mojo was fair game because you can go get another one out of Zul'Gurub, but you cannot cage the Clockwork Gnome, since you can only get that once via archaeology.

    demon.within.x asked:

are there going to be resistance like stuff in pet battles like in pokemon? (Ex. Fire is strong agents Grass and weak agents water)

Yes. I hope to have a clear guide to these strengths/weaknesses on the site before the expansion launch. I scratched the surface of the system in the guide to my first day of pet battles that I wrote a few weeks back.

    Crazy_Drago1 asked:

Will we ever see an update to Karazahn? Maybe with a working "lower Karazahn" section? I know Blizzard likes to focus on new content instead of reusing old when they can. But Kara is likely one of the most popular instances in WoW and there are plenty of players who never got to experience it when it was new content. It's just not the same when you can blow through the instance solo as a level 85.

    Probably. When? I don't know.

    JCD1975 asked:

How much xp do you earn from pet battles? Is it a reasonable alternative for leveling?

You get very little XP from pet battles. The only XP you gain is via the few pet battle quests. The battles themselves give your pets XP. It isn't a leveling alternative; it's a secondary activity.

    JeffLaBowski asked:

For us low-tech folks- How can you tell if you successfully downloaded the 5.0 patch? I saw my Blizzard downloader on my tool bar but it didn't look like anything was going on.

The easiest way would be to open your launcher, click the Info dropdown menu, and select Connection Info. It will tell you how much data you've downloaded, and if you're in the process of downloading, it will break down all of your P2P connections.

    bookworm13 asked:

Will relics/totems go away in patch 5.0.4 of Mists? Just wondering when I should pull the trigger on disenchanting them to extract their delicious Maelstrom Crystal core.

Yep. They are all gray items of no value come patch 5.0.4, so if you're disenchanting them, do it the night before the patch.

Gingrich: Reid, Pelosi not living up to standard they set for Romney [VIDEO]

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich accused House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of demonstrating a ?level of hypocrisy? that the GOP ?can?t match? with their attempts to paint the Republicans as the political party of the rich.

TheDC asked Gingrich how he responds when he hears Democratic leaders like Reid and Pelosi say the Republicans only care about the wealthy at the expense of everyone else.

?First of all, this is a politics that goes all the way back to William Jennings Bryan. It is in the genetic code of the liberal wing of the Democratic Party. They say it every four years and have forever. It is ironic when a Nancy Pelosi who is a multimillionaire says it. It?s a little bit like John Kerry saying it,? Gingrich told The Daily Caller in a video interview.

?They are geniuses at a level of hypocrisy which Republicans can?t match because we get ashamed. I mean, if you just watch Harry Reid in the last week, the attacks he made on Romney in this last week are pure fabrication. He has no proof, he has no witnesses.?

RELATED: Pelosi: If you?re making ?over $250,000, you don?t get the pie sweetened for you? [VIDEO]?

Reid claimed Romney has not paid taxes for 10 years but would not reveal his source.

?He just went to the floor of the Senate and lied but because he?s a professional Democrat, lying is considered a legitimate behavior and so he has no lost energy,? Gingrich said.

?Republicans flinch when they have to lie like that because they have some residual belief that it?s bad. Guys like Harry Reid just think it?s the price of doing business.?

RELATED: Valerie Jarrett questioned on Reid?s Romney tax attack [VIDEO]

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has called on Romney to release additional years of his tax returns.

?Remember, Pelosi?s released zero years, Reid has released zero years, so they?re setting a standard neither of them lives up to. My prediction is if Romney does release 10 more years, that?ll be inadequate and they?ll then say where?s the rest? Why isn?t he releasing his tax return when he was 17? They have found a gimmick that allows them to make a case that they?ll keep making,? Gingrich said.

?Romney?s got to make a bigger case which is what you really care about is your tax return and under Barack Obama, you?ve earned less, you?ve kept less, you?ve had less and wouldn?t you like to have a better tax return with a higher income with an economy that?s growing??

Pelosi said she would release her tax returns only when she runs for president.

?They?re automatically held to a different standard because they?re Democrats. My point would be what Romney wants to have is an argument about your taxes, not his taxes and what they want to have an argument about is his taxes, not your taxes,? Gingrich told TheDC.

?They [the Obama campaign] can?t win if the issue is, ?What has happened to you personally and can you afford four more years like this?? I mean, they could get beaten as bad Jimmy Carter was beaten by Ronald Reagan if that?s the issue. They can win if the issue?s Mitt Romney.?

Realty Times - Tips For Canadian First-Time Buyers

Since 2008, the Canadian Finance Ministry has tightened the rules for government-backed mortgages four times. The most recent changes, in July 2012, hurt first-time homebuyers the most, because it made it tougher for them to qualify for a mortgage.

The maximum amortization period for insured mortgages is now 25 years, down from 30 years. In 2011, 40 per cent of new mortgages were amortized over periods longer than 25 years, says the Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professionals. One-quarter of all mortgages had amortization periods longer than 25 years.

An RBC report says that based on a typical mortgage size of $288,000 for a bungalow, with a posted mortgage rate of 5.24 per cent, the reduction in the amortization period from 30 years to 25 years raises a homeowner's monthly mortgage bill by $136. The Ministry of Finance says that raises the monthly mortgage payments from nine per cent to 12.5 per cent, depending on interest rate assumptions.

The government, concerned about high levels of consumer debt, instituted the changes to slow down the real estate market and it seems to have worked. But the improving financial health of the country won't be much comfort for would-be first-time buyers who thought they were close to being able to afford a home of their own, but now have to wait.

A recent survey by TD Canada Trust says that recent first-time buyers were able to save up for a down payment fairly quickly. A down payment of five per cent (the minimum required) took less than two years for 71 per cent of those polled. A down payment of 10 per cent to 20 per cent was achieved in one to four years by 66 per cent of those surveyed, and 61 per cent were able to save up for a down payment of 25 per cent in three years or less.

However, the poll found that 29 per cent of first-timers failed to budget for some of the additional costs of homeownership, such as maintenance fees and utilities. Thirteen per cent didn't plan for closing costs (typically about 1.5 per cent of the purchase price of the home), and six per cent didn't budget for anything except for the down payment and mortgage payments.

If you are thinking of buying a home, first you have to "prove to yourself that you are ready to take on the responsibility of a mortgage," says Farhaneh Haque, director of mortgage advice for TD Canada Trust. "Start by comparing what it costs you to rent monthly to what it would cost if you owned your home. Remember, as a homeowner there are housing expenses such as property tax, insurance, repairs and utilities that should be factored in, in addition to your monthly mortgage payments."

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) website includes online worksheets to help first-time homeowners save up for a house. Most people know how much money they make, says FCAC, but do you know where your money is going? The exercise of filling out the worksheet can help you figure out where your money is going and suggest ways to cut expenses.

"Learning to stick to a budget can seem difficult at first, but the more you use your budget, the easier it becomes," says FCAC. "If you find your actual spending varies a lot from your budget, you will have to re-adjust the figures in your budget to make it more realistic. If your spending varies only a little from your budget, you are on the right track."

Once you think you have a large enough down payment to think about buying a home, most major Canadian banks have worksheets on their websites to help calculate what your can afford. The RBC calculator is here.

RBC says a common first-time buyer mistake when looking for a mortgage is focusing too much on the interest rate, rather than the type of mortgage they are buying. Over the last several years, variable-rate mortgages have proven to be money savers, but if you are worried that rates may go up, a fixed rate provides peace of mind. Most banks also offer a combined fixed and variable-rate mortgage option.

As demonstrated by the difference between the monthly payments in 25 and 30-year amortization periods, you can save a lot of money by having a shorter amortization - but that requires a larger down payment. Another way to reduce total interest costs is to increase the frequency of payments when you can afford it. Make sure your mortgage allows you to do this and to use prepayment privileges without penalty. It's a competitive mortgage market, with banks, credit unions and mortgage brokers all interested in securing your business, so shop around for the best rates and terms.

Getting preapproved for a mortgage is a great idea because then you will know exactly how much you can afford, and in a hot real estate market you can make an offer immediately if you find the house of your dreams.

First-time buyers can also take advantage of the Home Buyers' Plan, which allows you to withdraw up to $25,000 from your registered retirement savings plan to buy or build a home.

US Health Law May Curb Rising Maternal Deaths ...

This article was written by Andy Sampson of Price Benowitz LLP.

The US Health Law has been a subject of debate for a while. Since the law has passed, it is important to examine the parts of the law that will impact our society in a positive manner. More people will have access to healthcare and this affects society in a positive way. One segment of the population that will benefit for the Health Law is pregnant women.

When a woman dies in childbirth, many families consult an injury attorney because they feel that the death could have been prevented. One aspect of US Health Law that will be very beneficial to our society is the fact that there will be more access to healthcare for pregnant women. Providing more access to healthcare helps decrease several risk factors that arise due to the lack of prenatal healthcare. One risk factor that arises when a woman doesn?t receive prenatal care is maternal death due to pregnancy complication.

    EFFECT OF MATERNAL DEATHS

Maternal deaths can negatively affect a family in many different ways. Without the mother present, someone else has the responsibility of taking care of her children. In addition, it may be a hardship for a father to take care of children depending on his schedule. This still can put stress on extended family members.

Extended family members may be unwilling to take a child when there is the issue of who will provide financial assistance for the child for the next eighteen years. Some family members may be reluctant to commit to caring for a child for such a long time without any type of compensation. When there is no one available to provide financial assistance for raising the child, then a new problem arises.

When there isn?t anyone to care for a child whose mother died in childbirth, it adds to the number of children in foster care. The foster care system is already overwhelmed without adding newborns to the list of children in need of families. When there is no family available to care for the children of a woman who died in childbirth, then those children end up in foster care. Their foster care costs our system and can soak up valuable tax dollars.

    EFFECT OF IMPROVED HEALTHCARE

The effect of improved healthcare for pregnant women is profound. When a mother is able to get healthcare, she can make sure that she has a healthy pregnancy. Examinations can also catch some potentially fatal diseases such as gestational diabetes and enable a woman to get treatment that may save her life.

There is a trickle-down effect that occurs when a mother dies in childbirth. It not only affects the mother and her child, there are far reaching implications for society as a whole. The Healthcare law will help protect the mothers who want to get more healthcare, but were not able to before.

When there is a maternal death because the mother lacked prenatal care it affects our entire society. Providing more access to healthcare for pregnant women will be a benefit for all. Healthier babies and a healthier mother is one goal that may be accomplished by the new healthcare law.

Australian court to rule on landmark tobacco case

CANBERRA (Reuters) - Australia's highest court will rule on the world's toughest anti-cigarette marketing laws on Wednesday in what has become a major test case for global tobacco companies in their fight against restrictions on the sale of their products.

Australia's laws will force tobacco companies to remove all branding from cigarette packets from this December, and allow tobacco to be sold only in plain olive-colored packages which carry graphic health warnings.

The laws follow World Health Organisation recommendations, and are being closely watched by Britain, Norway, New Zealand, Canada and India, which are considering similar measures to help fight smoking.

Tobacco giants British American Tobacco, Britain's Imperial Tobacco, Philip Morris and Japan Tobacco challenged the laws in Australia's High Court, claiming the rules were unconstitutional because they effectively extinguished their intellectual property rights.

"My prediction is that the government will win, in light of past precedent and how the arguments proceeded," intellectual property law expert Matthew Rimmer, from the Australian National University, told Reuters.

"Other countries, such as the United Kingdom and potentially Norway and India, will be looking to see if the threats of the tobacco industry are merely bluster, or if they have some force to them," he said.

A win for the government would be a blow to tobacco companies and would end any domestic challenges to plain packaging. All political parties in Australia support the plain packaging laws, passed by parliament in November, so there is little hope a future government would overturn the laws.

The plain packaging rules do, however, still face a number of challenges under global trade rules.

    WTO CHALLENGES

Australia is already fighting trade complaints in the World Trade Organization (WTO) from three nations; Ukraine, Honduras and the Dominican Republic, who claim the laws unfairly restrict trade, although their trade with Australia is negligible.

Tobacco companies have also signaled a potential challenge under a bilateral Australia-Hong Kong investment agreement.

Rimmer said tobacco companies could also use a proposed new Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade deal to mount a further challenge if the TPP agreement includes controversial investor-state dispute settlement provisions.

Australia has strongly opposed lobbying by big business to include investor-state dispute settlement provisions in the TPP because that would undermine the ability of a government to pass domestic laws.

Rimmer said a surprise tobacco company win could force the government to either re-jig the laws so they comply with Australia's constitution, or to compensate tobacco companies for the loss of any trademark marketing rights.

He said the High Court challenge rested on tobacco company claims that the government has effectively taken their intellectual property and trademarks without paying compensation.

The case hinges on rights under the Australian constitution that say the government acquisition of property must be on just terms.

But the government argued it has not acquired any property, leaving the tobacco companies in ownership of the trademarks, and that the laws were needed to protect public health.

The plain packaging laws have been championed by Australia's Attorney-General Nicola Roxon, who was previously health minister and whose father was a smoker who died of oesophageal cancer when she was 10.

Australia wants to cut the number of smokers from around 15 percent of the population to 10 percent by 2018. Authorities say smoking kills around 15,000 Australians a year.

The World Health Organisation estimates more than 1 billion people around the world are regular smokers, with 80 percent in low and middle income countries.

Industry analysts are worried plain packaging laws could spread to emerging markets like Brazil, Russia and Indonesia and threaten sales growth.

Most internet marketing experts are excellent at generating traffic. And one reason that they are excellent is that they pay ALOT for the traffic that they do get. Now I'm not talking about a $100 advertising budget. I'm talking about a $10,000 advertising budget, and MORE.

You can generate lots of traffic to your website also if you know that right ways to do it. Getting traffic is essential to your online business, and it's a very important part of your online business success. If you can't get traffic, you won't get alot of sales. And without alot of sales, your business will fail very quickly.

In today's lesson, I want to share some insights on how you can get traffic to your website the smart way. You have paid advertising and free marketing that you can choose from. Both can be extremely profitable for you. In fact, here's the first way to get traffic to your website:

    1) Run radio ads

If you're an expert at you do, and you have identified a niche that has a pressing problem that needs to be solved, you should do any and everything that you can to go after this market. You will want to expand your marketing reach dramatically. And even though your business is online, you can still run radio ads and lead people back to your site.

Make sure you clearly state your website address. If there are any "dashes" in your domain name, make sure to mention also. In fact, you will even want to spell it out for them just so they get it and understand it. This way people can understand how to spell it when they type your domain name into their internet browser. Here's another way that you can drive traffic to your website:

    2) Podcasts

Podcasts are easy to make, and are free. With radio ads, you have to pay for a segment and you only have a minute or two to state your message. With a podcast, you can make it as long as you want, and have people download it from iTunes or your blog automatically. You will want to get set up with a service called "Feedburner" if you're going to pursue podcasting.

And the same thing applies with radio ads. When it comes time for you to state your website address, make sure you clearly state what it is, how to spell it, and to mention it at the beginning of the podcast and at the end. Podcasting is very popular and people will visit iTunes all the time just to hear your podcast.

These 2 traffic generation tips are things that are very simple and easy to do. Running radio ads will cost money, but you can reach so many people with a simple ad, and in return, get hundreds or even thousands of visitors to your website within a short period of time. I personally think that you should use both in your marketing arsenal today.

Good luck with using these 2 strategies to get more traffic to your website.

McIlroy up by 2 in final round of PGA Championship

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (AP) ? In a year when no lead seems safe, Rory McIlroy is the man trying to hold on in the season's last major.

McIlroy began the final round with an easy par Sunday to remain the leader at 7 under in the PGA Championship, but Ian Poulter started with four straight birdies to pull into sole possession of second place, two shots behind.

Carl Pettersson was third at 4 under.

McIlroy finished his third round earlier Sunday, wrapping up a 5-under 67 after players returned to Kiawah Island's Ocean Course. The third round was halted by rain late Saturday afternoon.

Tiger Woods made a birdie on No. 2 to join a group of players at 3 under that also included Adam Scott.

McIlroy, the 2011 U.S. Open champion, hasn't finished higher than 40th in a major this year, but he became the first player this weekend to open any significant distance on the field when he birdied the 15th and 16th holes toward the end of his third round. That was after he made five birdies on the front nine Saturday.

"I thought it was just a continuation of how I played yesterday afternoon," McIlroy said. "I struck the ball beautifully from tee to green ? same thing on Thursday, as well. Just one more round like that, and I'll be happy."

Poulter began applying pressure immediately, and his putt from about 20 feet for a birdie on No. 4 moved him to 5 under.

Jimmy Walker, Peter Hanson and Bo Van Pelt were with Woods and Scott at 3 under.

Woods trailed by five after a third-round 74, but he reached the par-5 second hole in two and then dropped to his knees after nearly making an eagle putt from about 20 feet. He settled for a tap-in birdie instead.

It was Scott who was in control at the British Open last month before bogeying the last four holes and losing to Ernie Els. None of the 54-hole leaders at the other three majors this year ? Scott at the British Open, Peter Hanson at the Masters, and Graeme McDowell and Jim Furyk at the U.S. Open ? have held on to win.

"Obviously to have a good round and try and win requires mental toughness," Scott said. "I think this afternoon as it comes down to the back nine, especially at this golf course, is going to require everyone's skill to be at their best."

Woods will have a lot to do in the final round if he hopes to win his 15th major championship and first since 2008.

"I'm right there," Woods said after finishing his third round. "I was at one point six back, and we had a lot of holes to play, so I was very encouraged the way I dug down deep and got this thing turned around and gave myself a chance going into this afternoon."

In the morning, while playing the third round, Woods wasn't pleased with his drive on the par-4 15th hole. His club went sailing when he let go of it on the follow through, and the ball flew well to the right of the fairway, landing in a grassy, sandy area not too far from the beach.

He was able to recover, hitting a terrific shot to the green. He then came up limping for a few seconds before pulling what appeared to be some sort of prickly brush off the right leg of his pants.

Woods looked fine when he arrived at the green and two-putted for par.

"It got in both legs ? well, left shoe, right shoe, and then in my right leg," he said. "It itched like hell for about a hole, and it was fine."

With a number of players finishing the third round Sunday morning, the final round was being played in threesomes off both tees, rare for a major championship.

It was the first time since 2008 that the PGA Championship didn't complete three rounds on Saturday. Some players had to go 36 holes on the final day that year, and Padraig Harrington wound up winning his second straight major.

Tel Aviv University researchers uncover a 12th century BCE seal depicting a man and lion in battle

Tel Aviv University researchers recently uncovered a seal, measuring 15 millimetres (about a half-inch) in diameter, which depicts a human figure next to a lion at the archaeological site of Beth Shemesh, located between the Biblical cities of Zorah and Eshtaol, where Samson was born, flourished, and finally buried, according to the book of Judges. The scene engraved on the seal, the time period, and the location of the discovery all point to a probable reference to the story of Samson, the legendary heroic figure whose adventures famously included a victory in hand-to-paw combat with a lion.

While the seal does not reveal when the stories about Samson were originally written, or clarify whether Samson was a historical or legendary figure, the finding does help to "anchor the story in an archaeological setting," says Prof. Shlomo Bunimovitz of TAU's Department of Archaeology and Ancient Near Eastern Civilizations. Prof. Bunimovitz co-directs the Beth Shemesh dig along with Dr. Zvi Lederman.

"If we are right and what we see on the seal is a representation of a man meeting a lion, it shows that the Samson legend already existed around the area of Beth Shemesh during that time period. We can date it quite precisely," Prof. Bunimovitz adds.

The right place, the right time

The seal was discovered with other finds on the floor of an excavated house, dated by the archaeologists to the 12th century BCE.

Geographically, politically, and culturally, the legends surrounding Samson are set in this time period, also known as the period of the Judges, prior to the establishment of kingship in ancient Israel. The area of Beth Shemesh was a cultural meeting point where Philistines, Canaanites, and Israelites lived in close proximity, maintaining separate identities and cultures. Samson's stories skip across these cultural borders, Dr. Lederman says. Although he was from the Israelite tribe of Dan, Samson is frequently depicted stepping out into the world of the Philistines even searching for a Philistine wife, much to the chagrin of his parents.

Although Samson did have some positive interactions with the Philistines his infamous lion brawl took place on the way to his bachelor party with a group of Philistine men prior to his marriage to his first Philistine wife in Timnah he is also reputed to have fought against the Philistines. In one tale, this ancient superman is said to have killed 1,000 Philistines with a single donkey's jaw bone.

"Samson has a very legendary aura," explains Dr. Lederman, calling the Samson stories "border sagas." On one hand, Samsom could cross the border and interact with the Philistines, but on the other, he met with danger and various challenges when he did stray out of his home territory. "When you cross the border, you have to fight the enemy and you encounter dangerous animals," Dr. Lederman says. "You meet bad things. These are stories of contact and conflict, of a border that is more cultural than political."

    Cultural connections and conflicts

The Philistines were immigrants, one of a number of so-called "sea peoples", originating from the Aegean region. They settled along the southern coastal plain and the lowlands of present-day Israel, including Ashdod, Ashkelon Gaza, Gath, and Ekron. Here they created their own cultural and political enclave and were always seeking to expand their own territory. "The flourishing Canaanite village of Beth Shemesh, despite frequent destruction caused by their aggressive neighbors, was not abandoned or won by the Philistines and retained its original culture and identity", Dr. Lederman adds.

The border disputes and the Canaanite resistance to growing Philistine pressure and cultural influence created some identity changes, Prof. Bunimovitz believes. This period of contact and strife may have been the "meat" of the Samson legend incorporated in the Book of Judges, the seventh book of the Hebrew Bible that tells the stories of figures who champion the Israelite cause and fight against oppression through this historical period.
