HAPPY NEW YEAR

Ancient Chinese culture dictates that a snake won?t attack its opponent unless it is hungry, so?Ping Pong Dim Sum?is encouraging their patron snakes to feed their hunger with food and drink specials during their two-part Chinese New Year celebrations from February 10 ? 24.

For the first week of Chinese New Year, guests can take advantage of?7 days of [Snake] Sins?promotions at both the Chinatown and Dupont Circle locations, listed below:

Sunday, February 10th?? Snakeskin Sunday (Sin: Gluttony)

Guests that wear snakeskin print clothing (or a boa) can shed 15% from their?Lazy Sumday?bill (valid 11am-4pm)

Monday, February 11th?? Year of the Snake Charity (Sin: Pride)

Ping Pong will donate a portion of the proceeds from the Chinese New Year specialty cocktail,?Snake Venom(a blend of rum, guava and Jasmine Iced Tea) to the Chinatown Community Cultural Center.

Tuesday, February 12th?- ?Snakes on a Plane? Viewing Party (Sin: Sloth)

Visit Ping Pong Dupont for a ?Snakes on a Plane? Viewing party at 8pm and take advantage of Yum Cha (happy hour) food and drink?specials?offered from 4pm-11pm.

Round out the week with a special Chinese New Year celebratory performance for dinner guests at Ping Pong Dupont.

RESTAURANT WEEK

DC Restaurant Week will take place from February 4-10, 2013. ?Make your reservations now! ?Pick your spots here.

Ironically, I avoid Restaurant Week like the plague. ?Overcrowded restaurants, food prepped way to early for my taste and rushed service?I?ll pass. ?This is probably the reason that I love?Food, Wine & Co.?s ??Anti-Restaurant Week Menu?, which will be offered?from January 28th?- February 2nd. ??The unfortunate part about Restaurant Week is that while diners are getting a deal, the high volume and limited menu means they are not getting to?know a restaurant and generally getting sub-standard food,??says Food, Wine & Co.?Executive Chef Michael Harr.??We are over bad food for cheaper prices and in lieu, wanted to offer diners the chance to taste some truly extraordinary food. High-level, tasting menu dishes that would cost diners upwards of several hundred dollars in other restaurants.? ?Food, Wine & Co.?s Anti-Restaurant Week Menu is priced at $59 and offers a 5-course tasting menu. ?Check out their site here.

Giant Victory in Europe on Taxing Financial Speculation

Published on Wednesday, January 23, 2013 by Institute for Policy Studies

European ministers didn't even have to take a formal vote because it was obvious that there was sufficient support to move ahead

EU finance ministers were scheduled to vote January 22 on whether to authorize 11 member states to proceed with the introduction of a financial transaction tax (FTT). As it turned out, the ministers didn?t even have to take a formal vote because it was obvious that there was sufficient support to move ahead.

Members of National Nurses United protest against the Robinhood Tax. (Photograph: National Nurses United)The 11 countries are Belgium, Germany, Estonia, Greece, Spain, France, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia and Slovakia. It will be possible for other governments to opt in at a later date. And in fact, the Netherlands has expressed interest, but they want to negotiate an exemption for their pension funds.?

Next Steps

The next step is for the European Commission to make a proposal for the tax. The proposal will be based on one introduced by the Commission in September 2011 that would apply a 0.1% tax rate on trades of stocks and bonds and a 0.01% rate for derivatives trades. As described in the European Council statement released today, the aim of this proposal is ?for the financial industry to make a fair contribution to tax revenues, whilst also creating a disincentive for transactions that do not enhance the efficiency of financial markets.?

The proposed tax is based on the ?residence principle,? meaning that a financial transaction would be taxed in each case where a resident of one of the participating EU member states was involved even if the transaction was carried out in a country that is not a participant.

The tax proposal will have to be adopted by unanimous agreement of the participating member states. EU Tax Commissioner Algirdas Semeta says it is possible that the tax could enter into force beginning January 1, 2014.?

Use of Funds

Although some press reports have said the funds will go towards bailing out European banks, there is no agreement yet on how revenues will be allocated. International campaigners who have been advocating for financial transactions taxes for several years will be redoubling their efforts to demand that revenues to go towards social and environmental purposes.

AUM Men's soccer to host college prep camp in February

The Auburn University at Montgomery men's soccer program and the Wulf Koch Soccer Academy will host its annual College Prep Camp, a two-day camp and clinic, on February 2-3, 2013, at the AUM Soccer Stadium.

The event is open to boys ages 15 and up and provides an opportunity to become more familiar with the elite college level. This camp has a specifically designed curriculum and will feature only the best and most effective techniques available. All instruction will be conducted by college coaches, who will put campers through the paces of a typical college pre-season routine.

The camp setting will challenge the field players in attacking skills, speed of play, and quick decision making through small-sided, 11 vs. 11 matches. The goalkeepers will be challenged through individual exercises, as well as full-sided activities.

The camp director is AUM head coach Wulf Koch, who after leading the AUM women's program for three seasons to a record of 49-18-3 and a 2004 NAIA National Tournament "Sweet 16" appearance, took over the AUM men's program in 2007. In his six years as the men's coach, his record stands at 79-32-11. It includes a NAIA Final Four appearance, a NAIA quarterfinal appearance, a Regional Championship as well as the 2012 SSAC Conference Tournament Championship.

Registration for the camp is $100 and space is limited. A training shirt is also included in the registration fee.

A registration from can be found on the men?s soccer section of www.AUMathletics.com. For more information, contact the AUM men's soccer office at (334) 244-3617 or via e-mail at wkoch@aum.edu.

Breath Test Could Sniff Out Infections in Minutes

breath test to detect lung infection

Bacteria hiding in the lungs might not be able to hide much longer. Although traditional tests can take days or weeks to culture to determine the presence of certain harmful bacteria?such as those that cause tuberculosis?a much more rapid technique for detecting lung infections might be on the horizon.

Researchers have developed a test that can detect the presence of common infectious bacteria based just on the breath. The test picks up signature volatile organic compound (VOC)?particles emitted in gasses?profiles that the bacteria produce that are distinct those that the body?or other bacteria?give off. The findings were published online January 10 in the Journal of Breath Research.

The researchers, led by Jiangjiang Zhu of the University of Vermont, conducted the studies in lab mice that were infected with different types of common bacteria: two different strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa, which can cause pneumonia, and one strain of Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause respiratory infections. The next day, the researchers tested the animals? breath by ionizing breath samples then shooting them through a mass spectrometer to analyze concentrations of various VOCs in a process called secondary electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SESI-MS).

The test detected the different bacterial infections as well as differentiated between healthy and infected mice. It also located the difference between the two strains of P. aeruginosa. The researchers call these different VOC signatures a bacteria?s ?breathprint.?

?We have strong evidence that we can distinguish between bacteria infections of the lung in mice very effectively using the breathprint SESI-MS approach,? Jane Hill, also of the University of Vermont and study co-author, said in a prepared statement. This technique will have to be tested in large human trials before it makes an appearance in the clinic. But the rapidity of the test is appealing. And it could at least make it a good first step in detecting bacterial infections, with a follow-up culture coming later if deemed necessary?to detect drug-resistant TB, for example.

Hunting for compounds in the breath can be tricky because individuals have different collections of compounds, creating some 4,000 to 6,000 potential compounds to contend with. ?This high degree of variability in the composition of human breath underscores the difficulty inherent in choosing a small number of biomarkers for diagnostic purposes,? the researchers noted in their paper. But the SESI-MS technique can find even very low concentrations of particular VOCs?all the way down to parts per trillion.

This testing technique is also promising because it samples the VOC fingerprint of a bacterial infection in a host?rather than comparing a host sample to a profile from bacteria cultured in the lab. This real-life proof-of-principle is important because, ?there will be VOCs that are unique to the host-pathogen interaction,? the researchers hypothesized in their paper.

Similar breath tests have also been studied for detecting other ailments, such as diabetes and cancer. And Hill and her colleagues think that they might be able to extend the ?breathprint? approach to identify other infections. ?I suspect that we will also be able to distinguish between bacterial, viral and fungal infections of the lung,? she noted.

Ai Weiwei: In China, Lack Of Truth 'Is Suffocating'

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, who has been outspoken about the lack of freedom in his homeland and was imprisoned in what he and his supporters say was an effort to keep him quiet, told our colleagues at Boston's WBUR this week that the lack of truth in China is "suffocating ... like bad air all the time."

WBUR's On Point with Tom Ashbrook had the conversation with Ai, who hasn't spoken often with American media outlets in recent months. Among the highlights:

-- On Using Art To Spread The Truth: "We have to talk about the truth. We have to talk about the fact[s]. We have to also share our opinions or communicate with others. In China, this is basically very much lacking in daily life. ...The state newspaper or television never tells you the truth ... which is suffocating. It's like bad air all the time.."

-- Despite Censorship, He Speaks To More Chinese Than Anyone: "I think I represent more people in China, or speak to [a larger] Chinese audience, than anybody ? artist ? in history," even though the government is "scared if they let me to talk."

"I [am] very surprised too, because each day I will meet young people, walking in the park, or on streets. They will come to shake hands with me, to ask me to take a photo. They will say, 'we really understand you.' I [am] surprised because under such censorship, my name cannot even appear in the Chinese domestic Internet. If you type my name, the whole sentence will disappear, so even under than condition, they still know me."

-- Prison Was "Inhuman": "The prison is very different from a prison anywhere. ... It's completely inhuman treatment. You have two soldiers who watch you 24 hours a day, including when you're taking a shower, using the bathroom. The eye will never move away from you for one second. And you know, they're standing 80 centimeter[s] away from you. ... And they give you a lot of pressure. You cannot sleep at night. ... You never can even know what [the] outside looks like. You have no rights to call a lawyer or tell your family where you are. ... So the feeling is like you become ... little beans dropped on the floor in some corner and people just forget about you. It's a very terrifying situation."

(Our thanks to WBUR's Julie Claire Diop.)

LGBT trailblazer Kecia Cunningham named Mayor Pro Tem of Decatur

images/stories/1-9-13/keciacunningham.jpg

Kecia Cunningham, who made history in 1999 when she became the first openly gay African American elected to public office in Georgia and the Southeast, was named mayor pro tem of Decatur this week.

Cunningham has served on the Decatur City Commission since her historic victory more than a decade ago. Decatur commissioners elect the city?s mayor and mayor pro tem out of their ranks.

Cunningham was voted unanimously to the post Jan. 7 during the first commission meeting of the new year. The city's new mayor is Jim Baskett.

Decatur has changed since 1999, Cunningham said.

"We've gone from being a sleepy hamlet to a poster child for smart growth with a really active and viable downtown," she said. "Decatur is a good place to live, work and play."

Cunningham?s life has also changed. She identifies as bisexual and said she gives honor to her former girlfriend of 17 years as well as to the man with whom she is currently in a relationship.

"I want to thank everyone who has supported me over the years and say I will continue to work hard to make Decatur a great place for all family styles," she said.

The Decatur City Commission consists of five city commissioners elected in nonpartisan elections. In March, the commission will call for a special election to elect a commissioner from District 1 to fill Bill Floyd?s unexpired term. Visit www.decaturga.com for more information.
