Last month I finally got the chance to try an iced coffee for the first time since an ill advised carton of Nestle Frappe back at primary school which scarred me for life (I think it?s where they got the idea for that 3 in 1 monstrosity they were pushing at Tube stations recently). This time I showed more sense and went to the Vietnamese cafe Banh Mi Bay and sampled this summer drink made by the people who do it the best.
Strong, but not bitter and slightly sweet from condensed milk, it was so refreshing I couldn?t stop thinking about it. I wanted to re-live its cooling caffeine hit and when Kavey mentioned that July?s Bloggers Scream for Ice Cream challenge was a condensed milk custard, I knew what I had to do?
Vietnamese Coffee Ice Cream (makes about a litre)
First make your coffee. You?re probably having kittens at the thought of using instant coffee, but I always keep some in the house for baking and cooking as you want a good strong coffee flavour without too much liquid and proper ground beans don?t do this. If you really object to the instant stuff, this is a good time to try cold brewing coffee and using the concentrate that method creates instead. I wasn?t organised enough so instead I used 3 tablespoons of freeze dried espresso powder in 60ml or 1/4 cup of boiling water and left to cool a bit while I made the custard. I find when you freeze ice cream it lessens the flavour and I like a proper coffee kick from my custard so heaped the coffee in.
I warmed the cream and whole milk, adding in the condensed milk so it all melted and looked like thick creamy custard. I separated the eggs and beat the yolks, adding in a bit of the condensed milk custard to temper it before adding it all back into the saucepan to thicken. Add in the coffee and the salt and str until blipping gently and thickening nicely. It?s like a regular ice cream custard base but much easier to do without splitting or it not coming together. Chill well. It will look as set in the bowl at this point as pannacotta and will be a little bit difficult to get into the machine without ladling.
From reading the expertise of the people organised enough to get their posts up on Kavey?s blog in time, it looks like you could freeze this without a machine because of the texture of the custard is airier than usual and wouldn?t just make a big icy block. I used my machine as normal and while it was churning, turned my attention to the garnish.
I adore coffee and raspberries together. The tang of the berries works especially well with coffee desserts and I decided I wanted to cut through the richness of this ice cream with a sprinkle of freeze-dried raspberry. Unfortunately I wasn?t organised enough to mail order these and instead spent an afternoon trekking round London trying to find them in Whole Foods and Waitrose and Fortnums and not getting very far. Instead I bought a bar of 36% cocoa milk chocolate with raspberry from Marks and Spencer and took my frustration from my failed shopping trip out on it with a rolling pin.
I sprinkled some crushed chocolate chunks into each section of my silicone tray and poured the ice cream in, topping with more crushed chocolate and freezing as ice cream bars. I served these between wafers and the crunch of these and the chocolate chunks made the ice cream seem even creamier than it was. Not to toot my own horn, but this was the best coffee ice cream I?ve ever had and coffee ice cream is my favourite?

If you occasionally have trouble telling where NBC's Olympic programming ends and the commercials begin, that's no coincidence.
Mark Levy, vice president and creative director for NBC Sports, heads a department responsible for the on-air look of the games, along with profiles of athletes and extended taped pieces such as NBC's feature on the 1996 women's gymnastics team. That unit also made a short film about basketball's 1992 Dream Team that aired in prime time Friday.
At the same time, Levy works with advertisers to produce some of their campaigns. He helped AT&T make a series of ads featuring aspiring athletes listening to the NBC broadcasts of key Olympic moments for use as inspiration. He has helped Visa with its Morgan Freeman-narrated ads that salute specific athletic achievements shortly after they take place. Another major advertiser, Procter & Gamble, devised a campaign saluting mothers that NBC supplements by interviewing athletes such as Gabby Douglas and Kerri Walsh Jennings about their own moms.
In an era where product placement advertising has become commonplace, Levy said he has no problems mixing the editorial and advertising duties.
"We want to work together to make sure the messaging represents both parties," he said.
Consumers better remember the ads with Olympic themes, said Alan Wurtzel, NBC's chief researcher. The key is to make the ads uplifting. From NBC's standpoint, that fits with the narrative of athletes striving to fulfill their dreams with Olympic medals.
NBC begins meeting with advertisers months before the games to discuss working together, Levy said. If the arrangement works well, the advertiser is tied in the public mind to a popular, positive event and NBC gets campaigns in the weeks leading up to the games that dovetail with its interest in drumming up viewer anticipation.
NBC researchers work for more than a year to get to know athletes, figuring out who will be the key contenders and which have the most interesting stories. Done right, this can make NBC look prescient editorially, as when the network had material ready on Grenada's Kirani James shortly after he became known for his act of sportsmanship in trading name tags with South Africa's Oscar Pistorius. The same researchers enabled Freeman to pre-record a commercial saluting American sprinter Allyson Felix after she won gold in the 200 meters following silvers in the last two Olympics.
"Storytelling has been our philosophy for so many games," Levy said. "We do hear from our viewers that they love to hear the back stories of these kids."
RATINGS: With the games winding down, NBC drew 22.9 million people for its Thursday night coverage, the Nielsen company said. The NBC Sports Network drew 4.35 million people to watch the gold medal women's soccer final between the United States and Japan, the network's largest audience ever.
AGONY OF DEFEAT: For every stirring story of triumph at the Olympics, there are more agonizing ones of dreams crushed. U.S. runner Morgan Uceny was a picture of heartbreak, in tears on the track, after she tripped in a scrum of runners and fell, ending her race in the women's 1,500 meters. "The sometimes cruel thing about the Olympics," NBC's Tom Hammond said, "the next games are four long years away."
BARONS & DUKES: Mary Carillo's features are usually a fun change of pace, but Friday's stuffy piece on British nobility wasn't her best. Combined with the better Dream Team profile, it made the broadcast feel as if it had stretch marks.
SALON: Not content with critiquing the Olympic boxing tournament, NBC's announcers had some sartorial observations. Looking at a Ukrainian fighter with a strange hairstyle with half a head shaved, Bob Papa noted they had an unusual sense of style. "Either that," Teddy Atlas replied, "or they have bad barbers."
UPCOMING: The women's basketball gold medal game is Saturday, the second-to-last day of competition.

If you were to survey store managers, merchandisers, buyers, or other high-level retail executives, virtually all of them would say that their first retail jobs were in customer service or in retail sales. They may have started part-time when they were students, took seasonal mall jobs during the holiday season, or started full-time after taking classes in merchandising or in management. For almost every retail professional, though, what began as a retail job turned into a retail career.
How did they work their way up the ladder of retail work? First, they built a foundation based on customer service and sales. This is partly because, when it comes down to it, every successful retail operation is built upon customer satisfaction. A retailer that offers great prices and good merchandise may do well initially, but if the retailer doesn?t take care of customers, the operation is no more than a flash in the pan. Therefore, a proven commitment and passion for exceptional customer service is necessary before advancement is possible.
But the act of keeping customers happy is only one component of enjoying career advancement through retail opportunities. Equally important are the skills you acquire while developing your talent for customer service. After all, customer satisfaction requires a high degree of efficiency (for example, quickly ringing up sales), the ability to troubleshoot (determining what the problem or challenge is and how to fix it), strong interpersonal skills (remaining calm when a customer is upset), and great communication (both in listening and speaking).
Customer service or sales jobs in retail quickly separate those with star potential from those who simply take store jobs out of convenience. Store managers understand that those who have stellar customer service skills directly contribute to the profitability of the enterprise. After all, you are instrumental in establishing and maintaining customer relationships, which result in repeat customers and increased sales. Because retailers almost always promote from within the company, you are well positioned to move up in the company.
As you gain experience in customer service or sales, you are likely to discover other positions that appeal to you. Perhaps you would like to explore retail merchandising, and assume responsibility for merchandise displays, signage, and everything else the customer sees when he or she enters the store. Merchandising is an exciting job that engages your creativity, your understanding of human nature, and your knowledge of the products your store carries.
Another retail career path is in management. Perhaps you like the idea of being in charge of every aspect of your department, hiring and managing employees, and bringing your personal touch to the customer experience. Once you have demonstrated that you have an aptitude for management, you can rapidly advance up the management ranks, moving on to store manager, regional manager, or even district manager.
Retail career advancement can take many different forms. Taking advantage of in-house promotion opportunities is key, but you can help increase the speed with which you move up the ladder by volunteering for company trainings, attending management training programs at community colleges, developing relevant technology-related skills, and taking classes in specialty areas like merchandising.
Wherever your retail career path leads, keep in mind that entry-level retail jobs give you the chance to develop a variety of skills that will serve you well.

BEIJING (AP) ? China's trade and domestic demand have weakened even faster than expected, adding to pressure on Beijing for a more aggressive stimulus to boost the world's second-largest economy out of its worst slump since the 2008 crisis.
Export growth in July plunged to just 1 percent from the previous month's 11.3 percent, well below forecasts of about 5 percent, data showed Friday. The slump adds to the pain for struggling exporters, raising the threat of more job losses and unrest as the Communist Party tries to enforce calm ahead of a handover of power to younger leaders.
Factory production, auto sales and retail sales in July, reported Thursday, also were more anemic than expected despite two interest rate cuts since the start of June and government efforts to pump money into the economy through spending on public works.
"With the export sector losing speed faster than expected, the government's current investment stimulus plan looks woefully inadequate," IHS Global Insight analyst Alistair Thornton said in a report. "The government is likely to respond by ramping up its stimulus efforts, with both monetary and fiscal guns firing."
The plunge in export demand has hammered manufacturers that employ millions of workers to supply the world with low-cost shoes, toys, furniture and consumer electronics. Thousands of smaller companies have been forced into bankruptcy.
"It is getting more and more difficult for export industries, especially in the past two months ? a sharp decline, fewer orders," said the boss of a furniture manufacturing company in Fujian province on China's southeastern coast. He would give only his surname, Lin.
Lin said he has avoided layoffs among his workforce of 700, but said, "I do not have enough work for my workers to do."
Asian stock markets tumbled Friday after signs the region's biggest and most robust economy might be in worse shape than expected.
Economic growth fell to a three-year low of 7.6 percent in the quarter ending in June ? well above U.S. and Japanese rates in the low single digits but painful for Chinese companies that depend on high growth to drive demand for new factories and apartments.
Analysts are forecasting a rebound later this year but say it could come later and be weaker than previously thought. Premier Wen Jiabao warned last month the economy faces "relatively large" pressure to slow further, raising hopes for a new wave of stimulus.
The slowdown is bad news for economies that are looking to China's demand for oil, iron ore and other imported commodities and rising consumer spending to drive global growth as the United States struggles with a sluggish recovery and Europe is mired in a debt crisis.
"This complicates the prospects for an imminent recovery," said Thornton, the IHS analyst.
The government is moving more cautiously than it did after the 2008 crisis, when its multibillion-dollar stimulus helped China rebound quickly but fueled inflation and a wasteful building boom. Authorities have pumped money into carefully chosen areas such as low-cost housing but are enforcing curbs on construction and home sales that were imposed to cool surging housing costs.
The International Monetary Fund and private sector analysts have trimmed this year's growth forecasts but say it should be about 8 percent.
Also in July, import growth fell to 4.7 percent from the previous month's 6.3 percent, also below forecasts.
Growth in industrial production weakened to 9.2 percent over a year earlier from June's 9.5 percent, its lowest rate since May 2009.
Retail sales growth slowed to 13.1 percent from the previous month's 13.7 percent. That is a setback for government efforts to reduce China's reliance on exports and investment by boosting domestic consumption. Wen, the premier, said last month that supporting investment would be the dominant element of the stimulus, an acknowledgement that consumer spending was failing to grow fast enough.
Growth in passenger car sales decelerated from June's 15.8 percent to 11 percent, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, an industry group.
China's trade growth has fallen steadily this year as global demand for its exports cooled and efforts to boost domestic consumption have failed to gain traction as fast as the government hoped.
In July, its global trade surplus narrowed by 20.3 percent from July 2011 to $25.1 billion but was this year's second biggest after June's $31.7 billion. Exports were $176.9 billion while imports were $151.8 billion.
"The weakness is broad-based," said Citigroup economists Minggao Shen and Shuang Ding in a report.
The trade surplus with the 27-nation European Union, China's biggest trading partner, narrowed by 37.9 percent to $10.8 billion. Exports to Europe contracted by 3.6 percent, and sales to some European markets fell further. Exports to debt-burdened Italy plunged 26 percent.
The trade surplus with the United States narrowed by 4.8 percent to $19.9 billion.
Growth in exports to other key Chinese trading partners including Japan, South Korea and Southeast Asia also slowed.
Beijing has set a goal of increasing total trade by 10 percent this year, a target that looks increasingly hard to meet. Trade grew 9.2 percent for the first half of the year but, with July added in, the rate for the first seven months fell to 7.1 percent.
"Export growth will likely be weak in the coming months as well," said Nomura economist Zhiwei Zhang.
