Sony seeks head start over Microsoft with new PlayStation

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sony Corp said it will launch its next-generation PlayStation this year, hoping its first video game console in seven years will give it a much-needed head start over the next version of Microsoft's Xbox and help revive its stumbling electronics business.

The new console will have a revamped interface, let users stream and play video games hosted on servers, and allow users to play while downloading titles as well as share videos with friends. Its new controller, dubbed DualShock 4, will have a touchpad and a camera that can sense the depth of the environment in front of it.

Sony, which only displayed the controller but not the console, said on Wednesday the PlayStation 4 would be available for the year-end holiday season and flagged games from the likes of Ubisoft Entertainment SA and Activision Blizzard Inc, whose top executives also attended the glitzy launch event.

It did not disclose pricing or an exact launch date.

Sony's announcement comes amid industry speculation that Microsoft Corp is set to unveil the successor to its Xbox 360 later this summer. The current Xbox 360 beats the seven-year-old PlayStation 3's online network with features such as voice commands on interactive gaming and better connectivity to smartphones and tablets.

But all video game console makers are grappling with the onslaught of mobile devices into their turf.

Tablets and smartphones built by rivals such as Apple Inc and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd already account for around 10 percent of the $80 billion gaming market. Those mobile devices, analysts predict, will within a few years be as powerful as the current slew of game-only consoles.

"It looks good and had a lot of great games but the industry is different now," Billy Pidgeon, an analyst at Inside Network Research, said of the new PlayStation.

"It'll be a slow burn and not heavy uptake right away."

MIGRATION TO MOBILE

Console makers will also have to tackle flagging video game hardware and software sales, which research firm NPD group says have dropped consistently every month over the last year as users migrate to free game content on mobile devices.

PlayStation 4 will have an app on Android and Apple mobile devices that connects to console games and can act as a second screen, Jack Tretton, President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, said in an interview.

"Playstation 4 ... really connects every device in the office and the smartphone and the tablet out there in the world," Tretton said.

The console, which has been in development for the last five years, will have 8 GB of memory and will instantly stream game content from the console to Sony's handheld PlayStation Vita through a feature called "Remote Play," the company said.

"What Sony is banking on is the ease of the use of this system," Greg Miller, PlayStation executive editor at video game site IGN.com, said.

After six years, Sony PlayStation sales are just shy of Xbox's 67 million installed base and well behind the 100 million Wii consoles sold by Nintendo Co Ltd, according to analysts.

Tretton said it would be a big undertaking to manufacture and distribute the console in Sony's four major markets by the end of the year, adding that it would be a "phased rollout" that starts before the end of the year.

Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia predicted Sony would probably get a couple of million units of the PlayStation 4 out by the 2013 holiday season and 7 million or 8 million out a year later.

Sony also announced a strategic partnership with video game publisher Activision Blizzard to take its Diablo III game to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 consoles.

Activision's upcoming sci-fi shooter game "Destiny" in development by its Bungie Studio will also be available on PlayStation consoles.

Retail Recon - The Business of Fashion

LONDON, United Kingdom ? A new 600 square-foot boutique stocking some of London?s?newest fashion talents, from Peiran Gong to Nasir Mazhar, has just landed in Soho?s Brewer Street, bringing a jolt of creative energy to a high-traffic commercial centre that, after years of homogenisation, is giving way to a more interesting melange of businesses.

Run by owner Stavros Karelis and renowned stylist Anna Trevelyan, the venture?s fashion director, Machine-A?is at once assertively new and a throwback to Soho?s heyday, when it was much more common to find small boutiques showcasing a young and irreverent breed of undiscovered talent, without a proven commercial record.

The store is anchored by a small selection of established, directional brands like Raf Simons, Chalayan and Mugler, which are joined by a number of London?s rising stars Shaun Samson and Agi & Sam. But Machine-A?s unique appeal lies in names that even savvy fashion consumers have rarely heard of and whose output can?t be found anywhere else. Indeed, the work of recent graduates, including jackets with chalked-on slogans by Central Saint Martins? Tigran Avetisyan and hand-printed white neoprene pieces by Gong, a graduate of the Royal College of Art, are given prominent display.

It?s an interesting proposition.?When BoF visited Machine-A, we bumped into veteran fashion publicist and East London fixture Mandi Lennard, a longtime supporter of London?s emerging creative talent, known for helping to put designers like Gareth Pugh and Roksanda Illincic on the map.

Designers like these have risen to global prominence in recent years, and attracted growing interest from a global clientele who visit influential concept stores like Dover Street Market, in the city?s Mayfair district. But, until now, London has lacked a centrally located showcase expressly dedicated to the work of their potential successors.

Machine-A, a stone?s throw away from Piccadilly Circus, is sure to bridge the gap between London?s youngest fashion talents and a set of consumers, both global and local, who increasingly thirst for the work of emerging designers but rarely venture deep into East London, where most of the city?s most avant-garde stores are located.

It might even draw some of the East London crowd into Soho.??I came in here and went nuts,? said Lennard, as she placed an order for a bespoke Tigran Avetisyan coat with a customised slogan. ?There hasn?t been anything like this since Jeannette?s,? she added, referring to the East End store curated by legendary nightlife character, and former doyenne of Boombox, James Main, also known as Jeannette.

As Lennard put it: ?We want independent. We don?t want designer, designer, designer.?

Republican lawmaker miffed with Obama's Treasury pick Lew

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A top Republican senator on Wednesday said he was unsatisfied with U.S. Treasury Secretary nominee Jack Lew's response to questions about a loan he received from a previous employer and was requesting more information before the Senate committee considering the nomination is asked to vote.

Lew received a $1.4 million loan in 2002 as part of his employment as an executive with New York University and other loans of more than $600,000 in each of the subsequent three years, according to the questions and answers released by Senator Charles Grassley.

Grassley, who is the No. 2 Republican on the Finance Committee vetting the nomination, asked Lew to describe the terms of the loan including the interest rate and minimum payment requirements, as well as other details, including how it was repaid and whether any portion of it was forgiven.

Lew said he did not recall the interest rate or other specific terms, though he said the university reported income related to housing assistance on his tax forms and that he paid all taxes that were due.

"His lack of recall is distressing, considering how much debt New York University students take on and how much they pay in tuition," Grassley said in a statement accompanying the questions and answers.

Grassley's objections are not expected to derail Lew's confirmation to serve as treasury secretary because Democrats control the Senate 53-45.

Lew previously served as President Barack Obama's chief of staff and White House budget director.

Grassley's comments on Wednesday were in contrast to Lew's confirmation hearing last week when Democratic and some Republican lawmakers on the committee were able to find common ground with Lew on updating the U.S. tax code.

A spokesman for committee Chairman Max Baucus, a Democrat, said Lew has been open and honest with the panel, answering every question posed to him in a timely manner.

"The confirmation process continues to move forward. All members are entitled to ask Mr. Lew follow up questions. And Senator Baucus has, and will continue to, listen to any concerns members of the committee may have," Baucus' spokesman said.

White House spokesman Eric Schultz said Lew had responded to the committee's requests "to an unprecedented degree," providing written responses to 444 questions.

"This follows three separate rounds of questions answered prior to his hearing, his release to the committee of six years of tax returns, a 3.5 hour confirmation hearing and his participation in personal one-on-one meetings (with) 41 senators over the course of two weeks," Schultz said in a statement.

Grassley, who has criticized Lew for investing in a venture capital fund registered in the Cayman Islands that Lew has since divested, has so far reserved judgment on whether he will vote in favor of Lew.

Baucus is expected to hold a vote on Lew's nomination after Congress returns from their break next week. He would then have to be confirmed by the full Senate.

100% 56 Up

All Critics (47) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (47) | Rotten (0)

We feel good, refreshed and depressed in watching these people get older, also embarrassed in moments and cautioned about the passage of time.

Apted, himself now in his early 70s, says he hopes to continue the series further. Long may it live.

Watching "56 Up" gives you the wonderful feeling of seeing a sociological experiment blossom into something novelistically rich and humane.

Time has been neither kind nor cruel to the 13 men and women profiled in "56 UP." It has just been time, which is what this groundbreaking series is about.

We are all older now, and this series proves it in a most deeply moving way.

Inevitably, one looks in the mirror afterward and thinks, What have I lost? What have I gained? And at what cost?

... feels like a retrospective and summation of the whole series, with ample quotation from the previous films, an approach that makes it interesting even for viewers who haven't seen the previous installments.

A completely unique and remarkable documentary project.

Apted skillfully weaves old footage with the new, and we become poignantly aware of another factor shaping their lives (and our own): biology, as the we watch the once-cute kids grow gray and heavy.

Perhaps the boldest and probably longest running sociological experiment on film.

I think the best thing about this movie (and the entire series) is that it forces the viewer to think about their own lives. It's kind of an awakening experience.

Once again, Apted assembles a captivating documentary that's profoundly educational, essential viewing to aid the understanding of the human experience.

"56 Up" is well worth seeing.

56 Up is still moving and philosophic, though not as exciting as earlier episodes, which had more drama.

The running time is over two hours, but the lives here are richly revealed and vastly rewarding.

Apted possesses the unsettling ability to shape perceptions of their lives and personalities from inside an editing suite, a fact that the members of his flock begin to recognize at varying points throughout their adult years.

...can be seen and appreciated by both those who have followed series and those to whom it is all new.

It's like the startling time lapse photography of "Chasing Ice" had been applied to the human race.

See you again in 7 years, friends.

In the eighth installment of Michael Apted's epochal documentary series, his aging participants (one of cinema's greatest assemblage of living characters) provide not just a telescope into the past but also a kind of primer for how to live.

Local swimsuit designer dreams big onto Sports Illustrated

Designer of "The Missy" - Kate Swim Missy Isaksson of Eau Claire

Swimsuit designed by Missy Isaksson featured in Sports Illustrated swimsuit 2013

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) -- It's a dream come true for an Eau Claire native who once had goals of being a professional swimsuit designer.

Less than a year after graduating from UW-Stout, one of Missy Isaksson?s swimsuits is now featured in a popular magazine known for its high fashion suits and sex appeal, the Sport?s Illustrated swimsuit issue.

Isaksson, a Eau Claire North High School grad of 2005, said she was head over heels when she heard the news.

?I started screaming and jumping up and down in the middle of the airport which I?m pretty sure a lot of people thought I was a little crazy,? said Isaksson. ?I called my mom right away.?

In December, while she was visited her parents Carol and Steve Isaksson and family for Christmas she found out that the suit had indeed been chosen after seeing a preview post from Sports Illustrated on the social media app Instagram.

Her swimsuit, suitably titled ?The Missy? is now featured on page 97 of the magazine, released on February 12, 2013.

?I do know Sports Illustrated receives tens of thousands of pounds of swimsuits every year and they hang them up in a closet and the editor in chief, MJ Day, she chooses what?s going to go with them on the trip,? said Isaksson.

And talk about exposure ? SI is estimated to sell four million copies of the magazine and around 70 million people see the issue every year.

?I was looking for my internship to complete my graduation for UW-Stout,? said Isaksson who now is an assistant designer at Kate Swim in Las Vegas.

She designed the suit during her internship at the company, working for founder Kathleen Breunig. A design by Breunig made the cover of the 2012 swimsuit issue featuring model Kate Upton.

"I knew I wanted to go for something fun but also sexy because Sports Illustrated, that?s what they're looking for, something sexy,? said Isaksson.

She said the one feature she loves about her bathing suit is the zipper. The zipper up front stops wherever you want it stop and can coverage as much or as little as the wearer wants.

"The Missy" is made of nylon spandex and sells for $240. It can be seen at www.kateswim.com.

Even the super model wearing the suit couldn?t help but love the design, saying in a video on SI.com that it was her ?favorite swimsuit.?

Eight other suits Isaksson helped design for Kate Swim also made the cut.

But before she got into the swimsuit design business, she wanted to be a marine biologist.

?I actually wanted to go all the way to Hawaii and be a marine biologist and that?s what I did and I actually ended up not going to some of my classes because I wanted to design swimwear so I?d stay home and design swimwear on my laptop,? said Isaksson.

That?s when she left Hawaii back to Wisconsin and enrolled at UW-Stout.

"Don?t ever underestimate the education you're getting in the Midwest, especially in Wisconsin. Taking those risks can definitely pay off,? she said.

One of her professors Kathryn Kujawa remembers Isaksson as someone with passion and downright obsession for swimsuits.

?Missy, and so many of our graduates, are prepared for success in this competitive industry because they chose the Apparel Design & Development Program at UW-Stout. Our program is unique in the country because it offers a strong foundation in both creative design and technical development of saleable apparel products,? said Kujawa.

?Don?t be afraid to follow your dreams,? advised Isaksson to the young people who dream big, ?Even if you stumble you can always pick yourself up and start over again.?

If product demand is strong, which is common after swimsuits appear in SI, then Kate Swim contracts with a manufacturer and ?The Missy? could go national or even international.
