Coach Belichick prepares his team for playoff war

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (WHDH) -- The Patriots are ready to rumble with the Houston Texans on Sunday and Coach Bill Belichick is preparing his team for war.

In a press conference Thursday, Belichick said, ?You don?t win a war by digging a fox hole and sitting in it. You need to attack.?

The Patriots dominated the Texans by 28 points a month ago, but Belichick believes his team needs to be prepared. Just like any branch in the military, you can anticipate success, but you have to adjust to your surroundings.

?When you talk to the Navy SEALS and those guys about when they go on a mission, they talk about, alright so we get there and we practiced going over a 6-foot wall and the wall is 30 feet high, well, that?s the way it is in the NFL. You practice for- you think you?re going to swim across a 200-yard lake and the lake is 800 yards and you gotta get across it. Well, you get in an NFL game and you think you?re gonna get this and you get that,? said Belichick.

Coach Belichick has been in 44 playoff games in his career and he admits when it comes to Sunday, he does get butterflies in his stomach. But at kickoff, the butterflies go away.

Carrion Flies Used To Find New Species

Your comment is the only one that's not a joke, shame.

I wonder if this technique could be used with mosquitoes to find people. I.e. remember them verifying Bin Laden's location using DNA collected from a fake inoculation campaign

if not yet, it probably won't be long.

The taxonomists (and botanists, zoologists etc) have only recently been able to discover new species by sequencing the DNA. Previously, it took laborious searching and comparison of samples -- especially difficult with insects -- and that's not so accurate. Now, you can lay out some sticky paper and feed whatever sticks through a machine.

Host a glamorous Golden Globes party

Golden Globes party ideas

When decorating your Golden Globes party, keep in mind that most of your decorations will also be perfect for your Academy Awards party in a few months.

Golden Globes decorations

Create a star-studded event from start to finish with glamorous decorations.

  • Gold baloon

Red carpet: Start the evening off right with a red carpet at your front door. You can purchase a cheap red carpet online, at a costume store or buy a long stretch of red fabric to roll out (make sure the rug is well secured so none of your lady friends trip in their high heels).
  • Star-studded: Make your guests feel like Hollywood's finest by simulating a Hollywood walk of fame in your home. Buy stars at a craft store and use a metallic marker to write each guest's name on a star.
  • Hollywood decor: To create the Golden Globes atmosphere, decorate your home with foil star cutouts, star balloons and Hollywood street signs. Everyone will feel like they are really in Hollywood on the big night.
  • Dazzling tablescape: For tabletop decorations, use a gold or star-studded tablecloth and top with gold-trimmed plates (Bonus: These can be used for holiday dining!). Keep the evening glamorous and sophisticated with old Hollywood-style Champagne glasses for your Golden Globes cocktails.

Golden Globes party games

  • Guess the Golden Globes winners: Before your guests arrive, print nominee ballots. Pass out the ballots as your guests settle in and ask them to choose the winners before the Golden Globes begin. Have a pool of prizes for whoever guesses the most nominees correctly.
  • Golden Globes trivia: During commercials, have a trivia contest using questions from the Golden Globes website or make up your own questions.
  • Golden Globes costume contest: When you send out your Golden Globes party invitations, ask guests to dress like their favorite Hollywood star but to keep it a secret. Make one of the evening's festivities a costume contest. Vote on who has the best costume, the funniest costume or another costume-related contest of your choice.

Golden Globes food and drink

champagne

Finger foods are always a good choice for the Golden Globes and other televised red carpet events. No one wants to have a sit down dinner while trying to watch the awards. Create appetizers that coincide with nominated movies and television shows.

For example, Denzel Washington is nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture ? Drama for the movie Flight, so give out mini bags of peanuts or mini bottles of liquor like they do on airplanes. As always, Champagne is a must at a Hollywood party, but you can get even more creative with cocktails inspired by the television series Nashville, like a Whiskey Ginger or a Bushwacker. Most important, just have fun and enjoy your glamorous Golden Globes gala.

McChrystal calls for enduring Afghan force

NEW YORK (AP) ? Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal said Monday he backs the White House's drawdown of U.S. forces in Afghanistan slated for 2014, but added that the U.S. owes Afghans some sort of enduring security presence to support them.

"We have an emotional responsibility," McChrystal said of Afghanistan in an interview with The Associated Press. He commanded forces there before resigning over a controversial magazine article.

"We created expectations after 2001 in people" that the U.S. would be there to keep the country from sliding back into the chaos of the Taliban years, McChrystal said.

His comments come ahead of a visit by Afghan President Hamid Karzai to the White House, as the two nations try to craft a long-term plan for Afghanistan that will include a U.S. military presence whose size and scope have not yet been decided. The Afghan war commander, Gen. John Allen, has offered White House planners a range of troop numbers to choose from, from 6,000 troops, who would be devoted mostly to hunting al-Qaida, to more than 15,000, enough to continue much of the U.S. training mission and also back Afghan troops in the field with intelligence and logistical support.

McChrystal said Afghans don't want an occupying army, but they fear the U.S. will withdraw completely.

"Like a teenager, you really don't want your parents hanging around you, but...you like to know if things go bad, they're going to help," he said. McChrystal added that the Afghans are not children, but they need to know they can trust America.

The general gave interviews upon the release of his memoir, "My Share of the Task," published by Portfolio/Penguin, an imprint of Penguin Group USA. The book outlines his time from commanding the top military counterterrorism unit, the Joint Special Operations Command, to the contentious process of crafting the Afghan war strategy, and ends with his abrupt resignation over an article in The Rolling Stone.

McChrystal took full responsibility for the piece, by embedded reporter Michael Hastings, which anonymously quoted members of McChrystal's staff disparaging the White House over war policy. He would not confirm whether the article's quotes were accurate, saying only that he "cheerfully" offered President Barack Obama his resignation, as the article had created a perception of a rift that would hurt the war mission.

But his eyes watered at the memory of telling his wife, Annie, that his 34-year Army career was at an end.

"Annie said, Good. We've always been happy, we'll always be happy, and we have been, every day since," he said. McChrystal now teaches at Yale University, and runs his own consulting group.

First lady Michelle Obama later asked McChrystal to work on Joining Forces, the White House initiative for military troops and their families. He said he'd spoken to the president at several Joining Forces event, but had never again discussed the resignation with him.

Part of the friction between McChrystal's staff and the White House was over McChrystal's request for an extra 40,000 troops, which Obama chose over a proposal by Vice President Joe Biden to limit the mission to a small number of counterterrorism forces and trainers.

The retired general insisted the strategy known as counterinsurgency worked, saying the Afghans are much better able to stand on their own.

"If you had tried to bring big American forces in and do search and destroy, or do just raids, it would have been pointless. The Afghan people needed to buy into this," he said. "They needed to believe we were there to protect them...and we weren't just using Afghanistan as a place to fight our enemies."

He called the looming drawdown of U.S. forces "inevitable," and said that while Afghan troops still needed to "mature rapidly," being forced to work on their own would help.

"You are never ready to do something by yourself until you actually do it, and then you are surprised you can," he said.

A tale of two units: How Sagamore and Yawkey were opened for fat ...

I first fell in love with mountain biking when, out of curiosity, I attended the grand opening of the the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails in the summer of 2011. Within two weeks, I bought a mountain bike, started a blog (Mountain Bike Geezer), joined IMBA, and became addicted to the sport.

My love affair with Cuyuna further intensified when I first rode (and raced) a borrowed fat bike in the snow at the Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout back in March. The Sunday after the race, participants were allowed to ride their fat bikes ? one day only? in the Yawkey Unit, my #1 favorite section of the trail system. Heaven!? But only one day?? I couldn?t complain too loudly because I didn?t own a fat bike.

So when I heard earlier this fall that the Yawkey Unit would be open to fat bike riding all winter, I contacted Aaron Hautala, president of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew and asked him for details on how the new policy came to be.? He fed me bits and pieces of the year-long process and I decided to pull it all together into a blog post because it?s a story of perseverance and collaboration among private and public interests, all for the good of the sport, the natural environment, and the local economy.

Gary Sjoquist and Jenny SmithIn late summer of 2011, one of the key people behind the creation of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Trails, QBP Director of Advocacy Gary Sjoquist, suggested to DNR staff at the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area (CCSRA) that the trail system would be a good place to pilot winter fat biking, given the rapid growth of the activity around the country.

Jenny Smith Letter to DNRIn the fall of 2011, Jenny Smith, owner of Cycle Path and Paddle in Crosby,? sent a letter to the DNR asking that Cuyuna?s trails be opened in the winter to allow snowshoeing in the park. While her letter didn?t specifically ask for winter fat bike access, she made the economic argument that the successful introduction of mountain biking in the warm months could be extended into the cold months with other winter activities besides cross country skiing.

On October 25, the CCSRA Advisory Council unanimously passed the following motion:

To explore funding opportunities to pilot a ?Winter Tourism Package? for the CCSRA to allow winter biking, snow shoeing, skiing, and access to parking beginning in December 2011 in order to provide an economic boost to an area negatively impacted by the recession. Motion was made by Representative John Ward and seconded by John Schaubach.

Steve Weber, DNR Manager of the CCSRA, began exploring the options for a winter trail program with his DNR colleagues. In an email to them, he wrote:

CCSRA Winter Riding mapSteve WeberIt became apparent early on that the majority of our existing mountain bike trails are too narrow and steep for winter mechanized grooming. However, I do believe there are some winter riding possibilities on the existing mountain bike trail but that is going to require a lot more research and testing before we can offer it to the public. Time permitting, perhaps we can do some testing on that this winter? After some research, I discovered the perfect area for a winter bike trail and conceptually designed a trail in the Sagamore Unit.

Steve showed the Sagamore Unit trails to local Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew (CLMTBC) members who were gung ho about the plan and offered club assistance.? His plan for a pilot project to see if there was desire and ability to open this unit up to winter riding in the future was approved by Courtland Nelson, Director of the Division of Parks and Trails. Plans were then made to brush the trails immediately and to secure the equipment necessary for grooming the trails in the winter. A group of CLMTBC riders began regular riding of the entire trail system to identify which trails and units would be best suited?experience and safety?for winter biking.

As the winter of 2011-12 set in,?CLMTB club members began talking up the idea of a winter cycling event, and the Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout was born. The race for the event was held in the Sagamore Unit and the Yawkey Unit was opened up for a one-day winter pass which?CLMTBC promoted with this video:

CLMTBC riders had identified the Yawkey Unit very early on as ideal for year round riding because its:

  • Trail footprint is manageable to maintain, groom.
  • Trails provide a great experience for riders: scenery, range of difficulty and elevation
  • Trails provide a challenge on a fat bike all within feet of each other.

In April of 2012, CLMTB proposed to the MN DNR and the CCSRA Advisory Council that the Yawkey Unit be open year-round. In November, the plan was approved: the Yawkey and Sagamore units would be open all winter, with Sagamore to be groomed by the MN DNR and Yawkey to be groomed by CLMTBC and area snowshoers.

Brainerd Dispatch article on fat biking? Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout 2013

On Dec. 28, the Brainerd Dispatch featured a front-page photo of CLMTB members Aaron Hautala and John Schaubach riding in Yawkey, along with a brief paragraph explaining the winter riding rules.

So props, kudos, and high-fives all around to CLMTB, the MN DNR, and the CCSRA Advisory Council for making this happen.? I expect to be riding Yawkey and Sagamore next weekend and I?m all signed up for the Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout coming up in March.

Here are some recent CLMTB videos of riding fat bikes this winter in Yawkey and Sagamore:

Hey everyone who clicked to look at this stuff even though it's only a 1x1 roleplay at the moment! We have good news! I, Kuroe, the co-creator (co=Complete Overlord) of this universe, I am happy to inform you that this is a TEST! Yes! A test! For an rp that will come later in time! As of right now, we would love to hear your ideas and requests for further things to be placed in this rp. As of right now, we. Have the skills and whatnot, but for some reason they're not up yet. So feel free to ask for things, design monsters, areas, dungeons, and whatever that we can use and put in when the time comes to actually make and open the real rp!!!!!
