Iran threatens to stop Gulf oil if sanctions widened

TEHRAN: Iran threatened on Tuesday to stop the flow of oil through the Strait of Hormuz if foreign sanctions were imposed on its crude exports over its nuclear ambitions, a move that could trigger military conflict with economies dependent on Gulf oil.

Western tensions with Iran have increased since a November 8 report by the U.N. nuclear watchdog saying Tehran appears to have worked on designing an atomic bomb and may still be pursuing research to that end. Iran strongly denies this and says it is developing nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.

Iran has defiantly expanded nuclear activity despite four rounds of U.N. sanctions meted out since 2006 over its refusal to suspend sensitive uranium enrichment and open up to U.N. nuclear inspectors and investigators.

Many diplomats and analysts believe only sanctions targeting Iran's lifeblood oil sector might be painful enough to make it change course, but Russia and China - big trade partners of Tehran - have blocked such a move at the United Nations.

Iran's warning on Tuesday came three weeks after EU foreign ministers decided to tighten sanctions over the U.N. watchdog report and laid out plans for a possible embargo of oil from the world's No. 5 crude exporter.

"If they (the West) impose sanctions on Iran's oil exports, then even one drop of oil cannot flow from the Strait of Hormuz," the official Iranian news agency IRNA quoted Iran's First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi as saying.

The U.S. State Department said it saw "an element of bluster" in the threat but underscored that the United States would support the free flow of oil.

"It's another attempt to distract attention away from the real issue, which is their continued non-compliance with their international nuclear obligations," spokesman Mark Toner said.

Rahimi's remarks coincided with a 10-day Iranian naval exercise in the Strait and nearby waters, a show of military force that began on Saturday.

"Our enemies will give up on their plots against Iran only if we give them a firm and strong lesson," Rahimi said.

JANUARY MEETING

EU ministers said on December 1 that a decision on further sanctions would be taken no later than their January meeting but left open the idea of an embargo on Iranian oil.

Countries in the 27-member European Union take 450,000 barrels per day of Iranian oil, about 18 percent of the Islamic Republic's exports, much of which go to China and India. EU officials declined to comment on Tuesday.

About a third of all sea-borne oil was shipped through the Strait of Hormuz in 2009, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, and U.S. warships patrol the area to ensure safe passage.

Most of the crude exported from Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq - together with nearly all the liquefied natural gas from lead exporter Qatar - must slip through the Strait of Hormuz, a 4-mile (6.4 km) wide shipping channel between Oman and Iran.

Iran has also hinted it could hit Israel and U.S. interests in the Gulf in response to any military strike on its nuclear installations - a last resort option hinted at by Washington and the Jewish state.

However, some analysts say Iran would think hard about sealing off the Strait since it could suffer just as much economically as Western crude importers, and could kindle war with militarily superior big powers.

"To me, if Iran did that it would be a suicidal act by the regime. Even its friends would be its enemies," said Phil Flynn, analyst at PFG Best Research in Chicago.

New York Times email misfire sets off firestorm (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? A New York Times employee misfired an email offering discounted subscriptions to customers who had recently cancelled the newspaper, sending it to more than 8 million people instead of the 300 intended recipients.

Questions about the emails hit Twitter on Wednesday, but it took the newspaper several hours to figure out what happened.

Initially the newspaper said it had not sent out those emails.

"The email is spam and was not sent from The New York Times," company spokeswoman Danielle Rhoades Ha had told Reuters.

She later apologized for the mix-up: "We regret this error and we regret our earlier communication noting that this email was spam."

The incident spawned a parody Twitter account, NYTSpam. "Ci@ali$, anyone? I'm tired of trying to sell papers," it said in one of its early Tweets.

Driver Profile and Cheap Car Insurance - Guitars are my Passion

Cheap car insurance will disappear during the quote process if you the driver doesn?t have a perfect driving record. Each insurance company will compare risk factors related to driving habits and then give you a price on a policy. Some of the best car insurance companies will refuse to cover a driver with multiple traffic violations and accidents in order to obtain cheap car insurance. The driver?s record has a greater influence on car insurance premiums than anything else.

?

Although some may differ in price; every car insurance company looks favorably on good credit ratings. The company will award a discount to what they see as mature behavior. The actual percentage of discounts is different with each car insurance company. Staying focused on good credit practices and let those practices be your guide to cheap car insurance.

?

Most car insurance carriers will reward drivers that take training courses to develop their driving skills. A number of cheap car insurance companies may offer a 20 percent discount for attending a class.

The Science of Santa

Scientific Inquiry into Santa Claus

As a result of an overwhelming lack of requests, and with research help
from that renown scientific journal SPY magazine (January, 1990) - I am
pleased to present the annual scientific inquiry into Santa Claus.

1) No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of
living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects
and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only
Santa has ever seen.

2) There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since
Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist
children, that reduces the workload to 15% of the total - 378 million
according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of
3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's
at least one good child in each.

3) Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different
time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west
(which seems logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is
to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has
1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney,
fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat
whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the
sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8
million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we
know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept),
we are now talking about.78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2
million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least
once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.

This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000
times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made
vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a poky 27.4 miles per
second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.

4) The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming
that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds),
the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably
described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more
than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could
pull TEN TIMES the normal amount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even
nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even
counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison
- - - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.

5) 353,000 tons traveling at 650 miles per second creates enormous air
resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as
spacecraft re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer
will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short,
they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer
behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire
reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa,
meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater
than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be
pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.

In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's
dead now.

Automotive circle of existence | Melanc Thonwind

As any old auto owner will inform you, the hunt for old auto sections by no means ends. Weve frequently acquired a person eye opened seeking and a person ear on the floor listening for your unmistakable sound of old auto sections. There are numerous suppliers available supplying old auto sections but for low-budget men like me, thats not frequently an alternative.

Junkyards used to be the key provider of old auto sections for budget-minded old auto owners. As time marched on although, old auto sections acquired more challenging and more challenging to locate in junkyards. My old auto is forty five several years old now and is a lucky survivor. Cars that achieve this age are rare sights for the street and in some cases even more so in junkyards. Then again, should you be versatile as part of your thinking and know a matter or two about sections interchangeability, junkyards can nonetheless aid you set your old auto back again for the street.

My 65 Rambler Marlin needed a power brake booster. A later model booster from one other American Motors auto may just be generated to get the job done. These later model sections can be found from vehicle sections suppliers for around $130. Thats about 15% for the order rate of my Marlin and more than I want or have to dedicate for a person component at this time in time. So I went as much as a self-serve junkyard previous weekend to discover if I could scare up a chosen one which would get the job done.

The yard was about forty minutes from my residence, way out in the hills. You?d have no approach it absolutely was available if you didn?t strategy on heading right to it. It had been an monumental destination and, sadly for my arthritic bones, developed on the hill while using the even more appealing stuff many of the way for the bottom. Frankly, I used to be awestruck by the number of pre-1975 autos they had available. The oldest auto I observed there was a ?48 Pontiac that nonetheless had many different invaluable sections to supply. There have been early ?50s Mopars, late ?50s and ?60s Ramblers, boat-tailed Rivieras, IH Scouts and pickups, Cadillacs, Mustangs (this includes number one era styles), Quite a lot of later AMCs and on and on. If many of the autos in the oldies area had been runners, it will have looked like the parking great deal at your regional A&P store from about 1972. All in all, there have been about 75-100 ?old? autos to pick over.

I found a brake booster in an AMC Eagle SX/4 that I think I can make get the job done. It took me a little while to get out because the master cylinder was nonetheless attached and I didn?t want that piece. Those autos are a hodgepodge of SAE and metric fasteners and I only brought SAE tools. Somebody acquired on the pedal assembly in the auto, it absolutely was a stick shift model, so the booster/master cylinder was lose, making it a littler more challenging to break the fasteners lose. Once I acquired it apart, I decided to take the booster over to a person for the older AMC autos to discover if it will fit an earlier auto like mine. So I walked (well, lumbered would be even more accurate) over a row or two and spotted an earlier Rambler sedan. As I walked as much as the auto and it started to look familiar. It had dull gray forex online paint, a turquoise interior, a dent in the ?c? pillar and no back again window. I looked inside and observed there was a hole in the floor where a floor shifter conversion used to be. It had been my very own old ?63 Rambler Classic! None for the other sections hunters seemed to notice when I uttered an appropriate for your occasion expletive.

The auto had taken two very hard hits, a person in the near side rear and the other in the off side front. The impacts had been of sufficient force that broker france even the oil filter was dented. It didn?t look like it generated it too quite a few even more miles after I sold it to a fellow that seemed pretty pleased to be getting it. The windshield wasn?t broken so I assume the passengers had been okay. It may have even gotten whacked while parked, you by no means know. There isn?t a straight panel on it anymore, which wasn?t the case when I had it. Even the interior was good back again then. My wonderful wife, who was only my girlfriend for the time, acquired it nice and clean. I had replaced both tail lights with NOS units for an Ambassador which had extra chrome trim on them and now they had been both mangled and broken beyond recognition.

Anyway, the hood and cowl panel had been off the auto and sitting right there, with just two little 3/8th-inch screws holding it in destination is the driver?s side windshield wiper spindle assembly I need for my Marlin. I wasnt even seeking or this component, but there it absolutely was just ripe for your picking. By the time I acquired that out, I forgot about checking the brake booster for fit and generated the long march up the hill with a getting heavier by the minute tool box and two light, but unwieldy sections in hand on the cashier. On their website, the junkyard said brake boosters had been $25, so I used to be ready for that expense and then whatever pittance they wanted for your wiper component. When I acquired as much as the cashier he looked at what I had in my hands and said, ?$20.? Both sections for less than the core deposit on the remanufactured brake booster alone! Thats a screaming deal for the highest order.

The recycleability of autos and trucks is well established. Besides their raw materials, which can be used to make new autos and trucks, they can also be recycled to make all sorts of other things. Being able to recycle a component from a long since gone auto like my old Rambler to use on my new Rambler, well, that really is the automotive circle of life. And when I switch for the Marlins windshield wipers for your number one time, and the drivers side wiper sweeps across the glass thanks on the recycled sections, the circle will be complete.

HTC Radar 4G appears on Microsoft's website looking like a Maitre d'

The HTC Radar 4G is available from T-Mobile. Unlike most smartphones that are released these days, the device was originally launched in white, looking like it was dropped in some snow. That is what makes the picture of the phone found on Microsoft's website so interesting. The variant shown in the image on the Microsoft site has the same white border but the outer part of the device is black. The two-tone look gives the phone the appearance of a Maitre d' wearing a tuxedo.

We are not sure if HTC plans on issuing a version of the handset looking like this, or if it was just done for the website. We must admit to digging the look, even if it seems formal. In fact, this might be the first Windows Phone handset that gets invited to a Black Tie affair.

By the way, while the Microsoft website is offering the HTC Radar 4G free with a $50 mail-in rebate, a $100 trade-in value on your old handset, and a signed two-year contract, T-Mobile's site is offering the device for free with the two year lock up.

(AP) ? Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson has gotten his Christmas wish.

Two days after hinting on Twitter of his desire for a new contract, Wilson says the team has given him an extension.

"'He came! He came!' Remember saying that as a little kid? Well he did: I got a new Red Ryder BB gun and a contract extension!" Wilson tweeted Sunday morning.

The team did not immediately respond to an email seeking confirmation. Wilson tweeted Friday that what he wanted for Christmas was a new contract from general manager Brian Burke.

"This Xmas could be better if Santa stuffs a certain piece of paper in my stocking. whatcouldthatbe," Wilson posted on his Twitter account.

The 56-year-old Wilson is in the final season of a four-year contract. The Leafs are sixth in the Eastern Conference with 40 points. Toronto has not made the playoffs in three previously seasons under Wilson, who is 119-120-42 with the Leafs.

Wilson, a defenseman as a player, was selected by the Leafs in the 1975 draft. He has a 637-546-101-88 coaching record with Anaheim, Washington, San Jose and Toronto. He is 47-48 in the playoffs.

iMAME app gets pulled from iTunes

In barely enough time to get out of the app store and into the hearts of retro gamers everywhere, the iMAME emulator on iOS has already been erased from iTunes -- just days since its release. Alas, that lack of any official endorsement may have reared its ugly head. Well, it was good while it lasted. Guess we'll carry on saving up for that Vita purchase...

Wal-Mart pulls formula after Mo. baby's death (AP)

LEBANON, Mo. ? A Wal-Mart spokeswoman says the company has pulled a batch of powdered infant formula from more than 3,000 stores nationwide after a newborn Missouri boy became gravely ill with a suspected infection and died after being taken off life support.

Dianna Gee said Wednesday the move is cautionary as health officials investigate Sunday's death of 10-day-old Avery Cornett of Lebanon, Mo.

No government recall has been ordered for the 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn powder with the lot number ZP1K7G.

The Lebanon Daily Record reports (http://bit.ly/vwyAs5) Avery received a preliminary diagnosis of infection from a rare bacterium called Cronobacter sakazakii.

The formula's manufacturer, Mead Johnson Nutrition, says the batch tested negative for the bacterium. Spokesman Christopher Perille says it's unclear if other companies received formula from that batch.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further information. AP's earlier story is below.

Wal-Mart has pulled a batch of powdered infant formula from its stores nationwide after a newborn Missouri boy who was given the formula became gravely ill with a suspected bacterial infection and died after being taken off life support, the retailer said Wednesday.

No government recall had been ordered for the 12.5-ounce cans of Enfamil Newborn powder with the lot number ZP1J7G. Manufacturer Mead Johnson Nutrition said its records showed the lot tested negative for the bacterium before it was shipped.

But Wal-Mart spokeswoman Dianna Gee said the company decided to pull the lot "out of an abundance of caution" while health officials investigate Sunday's death of 10-day-old Avery Cornett. The product could go back on shelves depending on the outcome of the investigation, but customers who bought the cans have the option of returning them for a refund or exchange, Gee said.

Gena Terlizzi, spokeswoman for the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, said Wednesday that samples of the formula given to Avery were sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for testing.

"At this point it has not been determined whether the illness is linked to the formula or an outside source," Terlizzi said in a statement.

The Lebanon Daily Record reported (http://bit.ly/vwyAs5) that Avery was taken to St. John's Hospital-Lebanon late last week after appearing lethargic and displaying what his family said were signs of a stomach ache. He was later moved to St. John's Hospital-Springfield, and preliminary tests showed that he had contracted a rare bacterial infection, Cronobacter sakazakii, the newspaper reported. He died Sunday after being removed from life support.

Avery had been fed Enfamil Newborn powder bought at a Walmart store in Lebanon. The store stopped selling the product after learning of his death.

Christopher Perille, a spokesman for Glenview, Ill.-based Mead Johnson Nutrition, said Enfamil Newborn powder is sold at a variety of retailers, but he didn't have information about whether other companies received units from the lot now being investigated. He also said he didn't know how many Walmart stores, and in which states, received formula from the batch.

Perille said all of the company's infant formula products are put through a battery of tests as they are produced, packaged and sealed.

"One of the things every batch of product is tested for is Cronobacter," Perille said. "We went back and checked on the batch in question, and it had tested negative for Cronobacter."

Public health investigators seeking the source of Avery's infection will also look at environmental factors, such as the water used in preparing the powdered formula, and at anything else the baby might have ingested, Perille said.

The Missouri Department of Health is advising parents to follow World Health Organization guidelines for safely preparing powdered infant formula, Terlizzi said.

"This includes washing your hands with soap and water, thoroughly sterilizing all feeding equipment in hot, soapy water and preparing enough formula for only one feeding at a time," she said.

The Danish National Advanced Technology Foundation is donating 112 million Danish kroner for a new platform which brings together Denmark's leading players within the sustainable use of biomass the University of Copenhagen, DTU, A.P. Mller Mrsk, Novozymes, Haldor Topse, Man Diesel & Turbo and Dong Energy. The platform will provide a framework for the parties' joint research aimed at developing specific sustainable solutions for the production of building blocks for chemicals and bio-based fuels for the global shipping industry. The platform will be headed by Professor Claus Felby from the University of Copenhagen.

Over the next five years, the research platform will develop new hybrid technologies which will pave the way for an even more sustainable and efficient production of biofuels than is currently possible.

"We will soon be forced to replace a substantial part of our energy supply with biomass, while at the same time having to produce more food. This calls for extremely efficient utilisation of our biomass resources. Not only technologically, but also in terms of how we grow and procure the biomass. The strong competencies within the biological and chemical conversion of biomass represented by, among others, Novozymes, the University of Copenhagen, Haldor Topse and DTU now make it possible to use biomass far more effectively, for the benefit of, for example, sea transport," says Professor Claus Felby from LIFE the Faculty of Life Sciences at the University of Copenhagen, who is heading the platform.

Biofuels for the shipping industry:

The development of biofuels for the shipping industry is an overlooked opportunity in a global market.

"For the past 75 years, the shipping lines have used oil, but looking at the next 75 years this is likely to change. CO2 emissions must be reduced, and in the long term oil is simply going to run out. Sustainable biofuels have the potential to become a real alternative to fuel oil, and we look forward to involving ourselves in the collaboration to develop biofuels tailored to the shipping industry," says Jacob Sterling, Head of Climate and Environment at Maersk Line.

Crops must provide both food and biomass for fuel and chemicals:

However, the increased use of biomass must not lead to intensified competition and a fight for agricultural land. According to the research platform, this will be avoided by turning existing crops into so-called dual-purpose crops, whereby the same crops can be used to produce biomass from stems and leaves, while at the same time yielding the same number of grains.

As part of the research project, the solutions will be tested on a large scale on engines and ships owned by MAN Diesel & Turbo and Maersk.

"The project is not only very technologically promising and holds considerable growth potential; it also represents a chance to establish Danish production and create jobs within the agricultural, industrial and transport sectors. In other words, the platform will take Denmark to the forefront of the development of a bio-based and sustainable economy," continues Professor Claus Felby.

The platform will work closely with the future Copenhagen Plant Science Center.
